A simulation showing how the vibrational energy of a molecule is shared with the surface of the catalyst it sits on, which affects how quickly the molecule reacts – in this case, two arms at left linking to form a ring. The individual atoms of the silver catalyst get brighter yellow as they heat up and vibrate more. The simulation covers about a picosecond, or a trillionth of a second. Also in the Five Dynasties, five great masters of landscape—Jing Hao and Guan Tong, Dong Yuan and Juran, Li Cheng—brought to this art a new profundity of conception and diversity of styles. Although no surviving work can be firmly accepted as by any one of them, major paintings of high quality and importance are attributed to them and are given close visual analysis in this lecture, which also introduces new theories and concepts of how landscape imagery can carry profound human meaning.
