After a brief discussion with a coworker, the idea hit me to try a stick of chapstick as a candle. This is the experiment.

The Tinder Torch from Ingalls Creek Wilderness Outfitters, at it's core is a man made version of fatwood. It is reliable, weather resistant, and long lasting. It stores well and can be adapted to pretty much any situation where fire is needed. It is an excellent sure fire option.

The folks from PineFire Fatwood kindly sent out a tester box of their Big Burn to play with. As you guys likely know, I am no stranger to fatwood so here I demo it's usage and specifically the quality of the fatwood they send; which just so happens to be absolutely fantastic. And guys, please watch the section on their Sandy Cookie Fire Starter. It is an absolute game changer in the world of all natural fire starters.

Many of my friends know, and some who have heard me make the statement that I don't care for Mountain House, or freeze dried foods in general, have asked me what I use as an alternative. This is my response and is the intro to a series over the coming weeks and months that I will be doing on how I handle or cook Healthy Camp Meals.

The Nano offers multi fuel options as well as many different configurations. Given it's fuel diversity and it's light weight with the Stainless Steel at 6oz and Titanium at 4oz and it's tiny packed footprint it makes for a great option for a Bug Out Bag, Get Home Bag, or any Survival Kit. Pack wise, it's almost like it's not even there yet it packs a huge punch. It offers a scalable burn which allows for an easy and quick boil for a cup of coffee or a longer burn for a dinner meal for a family of 6, maybe more. This truly is a powerhouse in a tiny package.

I have long wanted to play with some birch bark and finally after several years I get my chance. The approach I take to this one is a bit different. I take it from the perspective of if I had never seen it used before and see how things work. Honestly I was surprised how it turned out.

Nate the Otter Outdoorsman was gracious enough to gift me some Yellow Birch Bark to play with this week. Nate mentioned that he's been having some trouble getting it to light with just a ferro and not a flame and he asked to get my take on the bark. Firstly, thanks Nate, it was a lot of fun; it's truly a great resource. And second, here is my take my friend.
