Why on earth is classic car restoration so expensive? Sure, it's not cheap even to do a resto yourself at home. Parts are pricey - especially when you're doing a classic car. But at least your labor is "free" (well, you're paying in time and sweat, but it's worth it!). But a shop has costs that seemingly have nothing to do with the build. Compliance costs (licensing, bookkeeping, tax prep, etc.), insurance costs (building, business, workers comp, etc.), marketing (can't have a business without it!), taxation (oh don't even get us started!), research (finding parts - especially if they're NLA - takes a minute!) , and every vendor and supplier has these costs, too... so you pay at every stage. Still, if you'd rather not take that project on yourself, there are experts whose passion is restoring Volkswagens. It's a labor of love (even if nobody's getting rich doing this!).
