Nikola Tesla: "A Child of Light in a World of Darkness" The Tragic Truth
In order to be successful in life, you have to be intelligent and ambitious, but also have to have a little bit of luck. Although Nikola Tesla had more than enough of the first two, he was rather lacking in the last. Tesla was born in Croatia in 1856, during a fierce lightning storm. According to family legend, the midwife declared the lightning a bad omen saying "This will be a child of darkness", his mother said "No. he will be a child of the Light." In retrospect, they both were right, for just like the lightning storm, Tesla's life was extreme moments of intense light followed by utter darkness.

From an early age, Nikola showed signs of incredible intelligence. he could memorize entire books, he picked up languages easily and he could work for hours with very little sleep.
At the age of 19, he was studying Mathematics, Physics, and Electrical engineering at the Polytechnic institute in Austria and began thinking about electromagnetic fields and the possibility of making a motor powered by Alternating current.
Sadly Tesla began to obsess about this problem and worked tremendously long hours with little rest, he became addicted to gambling, lost his tuition money, dropped out of school, and had a nervous breakdown.

Starting "a new" once more, Tesla was granted patents on some 30 inventions, including his AC current Induction motor. He gave a talk about his inventions at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. present at this talk was George Westinghouse of Westinghouse Electric Co who recognized that Tesla's inventions were just what he needed to compete against Edison's DC current company.
Tesla licensed the patents to Westinghouse for $60,000 plus stock and royalties and hired Tesla as a consultant. "The Battle of the Currents" had begun.

Westinghouse's company was able to underbid Edison for a number of projects because AC current is cheaper to generate, the AC system is cheaper to operate and AC can travel longer distances easier.
Edison used publicity stunts in an attempt to make people fear AC current, he financed the AC current electric chair that put a convicted New York murderer to death. he even made a documentary called "Electrocuting an Elephant" where he used AC current to electrocute a circus elephant named "Topsy".
Although Edison lost "the Battle of the Currents" his fear mongering did force Westinghouse to bid lower than he should have so with his company in jeopardy, he renegotiated with Tesla.

In the meantime, Tesla had used Westinghouse's money and royalties to, once again, set out on his own. He had invented Electric meters and oscillators and the high-voltage transformer that is now known as the "Tesla Coil", he'd improved lights and experimented with X-Rays, he'd also given demonstrations of Short-range radio com
