I met a woman who walks past hundred dollar bills. And I want to tell you about her. 'Jane' emailed me several times over the last two months.  And at some point she scheduled a call to talk to me about my program 'You: A Force to Be Reckoned With!' So we're talking and I can tell she's a very good, caring person.  A very capable person.  And yet, someone who was working hard and not charging enough. I knew that I could help her.   But I also knew someone she could help. So I introduced her to a colleague who was looking for help with a big, important project.  "I think she can help you," I said. Both sides thanked me, and they scheduled a time to talk. A few days later... 'Jane' emailed me saying: "Hi Dov - Sorry for the delay. While I completely agree that "Force!" could really help, I just don’t feel right now is the right time for me (it’s a financial and a headspace thing). I’m certainly keen to stay in touch as I really respect your style and work." She then went on to say she'd talked with my colleague and while it really was a good opportunity for her, she couldn't take it on right now because... reasons. I reread her email, and it occurred to me: This is a woman walking past $100 bills. Had she only said no to "Force!" - I would not have had enough information. Had she only said no to my colleague - I would not have had enough information. But I reread her email and I could see that the same way of thinking was behind both of her decisions. She had never learned how to grab an opportunity. Thomas Edison once said: "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." When you're given an opportunity, you don't evaluate it based on how comfortable it will make you. You don't evaluate it based on whether you feel it's the right time, whether you can afford it or have the headspace for it. You evaluate an opportunity based on this:  Will it take me closer to where I want to go? If yes, then you ask yourself, "OK, how CAN I make this work?" And then you figure out the headspace.  And you figure out the finances.  And you figure out the logistics.  And you grab that opportunity with both hands.  Because that's the ONLY way to get to somewhere amazing! Now, it's easy for us to point a finger and say, "She's walking past $100 bills." But the truth is, we all do it. It's true for 'Jane' at her level.  It's true for me at my level, and it's true for you at your level. We're all walking past $100 bills - because we're not ready.  We don't have the headspace.  We don't have the finances.  Because...  [fill in your reason.] What helps us is awareness.
