2016 Lecture 05: Maps of Meaning: Part I: Anomaly and the brain
We have limited knowledge. In consequence, many things are unknown and unpredictable. However, we must still act when we don't know what to do. Much of the human brain is therefore devoted towards processing novelty or anomaly, which emerge when the plans we make to fulfill our desires go wrong.
Abigail Shrier and I discuss identity, gender dysphoria, the increased rate of gender transitioning procedures among young female adolescents, details of these procedures, de-transitioning, her personal experiences writing her book “Irreversible Damage”, and more.
Abigail Shrier is a frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal and author of Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters. Abigail used her experience as a journalist to interview a wide variety of experts on the explosion in the number of young women self-diagnosing and taking steps to transition to male using hormones and surgery physically.

Jordan explains some mechanisms we can exploit to optimize critical thinking. Step by step, he goes through his own process for critical thinking so that listeners can replicate it.
What constitutes critical thinking? Why think at all? What is the 'dialectical process' in critical thinking? How can we refine our ideas? And where should they even come from?

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down with actor and podcaster Russell Brand. They discuss the language of symbols, the collective unconscious, the evolution of theology, and why so many public intellectuals are coming back to Christ.
Russell Brand is an English comedian, actor, podcaster, and commentator. He first established himself as a stand up comedian and radio host before becoming a film actor. He presented for MTV UK and made appearances across media and TV throughout the 2000’s. In 2008, he leapt from British to U.S. film acting, appearing in the hit film “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” followed by numerous international successes. In 2013, Brand guest-edited an edition of the weekly publication the New Statesman, launching his interest and later career as a political activist and commentator. His current podcast, Stay Free, sees Brand calling out major news, governments, and corporations for affronts to free speech, expression, spirituality, and thought.

This is the first Big Ideas Lecture I completed, back in 2002. I read a book for very young children by Jack Kent called "There's no Such Thing as a Dragon" to a group of University of Toronto alumni (most over 65). I explained what it meant: Pay attention -- or else.
