Water cannons and tear gas were used against several hundred demonstrators in Brussels on Monday during clashes with police over COVID-19 restrictions.
Jets of water hit the remaining demonstrators, originally estimated at over 35 thousand, who were carrying banners and flags in the street while a police helicopter monitored the protest from the air.
Three police officers and one demonstrator were injured in the clashes, according to a police spokesperson. In addition, 42 protesters were arrested and two of them were charged.

A number of opponents of Austria’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate rallied opposite of the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party of Austria on Tuesday.
Police guarded the building as the protesters held a small rally and held speeches.
The Austrian government last month presented an initial plan to introduce mandatory vaccination against COVID-19 from February.
An initial draft of the legislation has suggested that non-compliance with the vaccine mandate may be punishable with a fine.
The Social Democratic Party of Austria is currently involved in the process of drafting the bill alongside the government and the New Austria and Liberal Forum.
A lockdown has been in place in the country since November 22 and is scheduled to end this Sunday, although restrictions will remain for unvaccinated residents.

The documentary on jailed publisher and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, ‘Ithaka’, made its world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival on Sunday.
Directed by Ben Lawrence, the documentary follows Julian Assange’s father, John Shipton, as he fights to free his son alongside Assange’s fiance Stella Moris-Smith.
The film begins with Assange’s arrest from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, and using Julian’s extradition hearing as a framework, charts an intimate story of the family’s crisis.
“A father fighting for his son really grabs people, and I think you can see the reaction from the audience tonight, it’s a very emotional movie,” commented Gabriel Shipton, Assange’s brother and a producer of the film.
The documentary features interviews with the likes of punk icon and activist Vivienne Westwood and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. The film also features a soundtrack composed by British musician Brian Eno.

Crowds of New York City workers protested on Monday against mandatory COVID-19 vaccination as the Friday deadline looms.
When the deadline comes, those who get paychecks from the city government but will have been unvaccinated by that time will be sent on an unpaid leave.
NYC mayor Bill de Blasio said he believes this will encourage government employees to get the shot.
The vaccine mandate allows workers to apply for medical or religious exemption.

Hundreds marched through Copenhagen on Saturday, in protest over COVID19 restriction.
Led by the 'Men in Black' activist group, the protesters carried torches and chanted slogans while marching through the city. A large police presence was deployed to prevent an escalation of the event.
