"You Would If You Loved Me" Part 2: Considering the Consequences (Guidance Associates # 6779, 1981)
Desperately seeking sound filmstrips like this one to preserve! Nobody in America is properly preserving them but me, and most have already been thrown away. E-mail uncommon.ephemera@gmail.com if you can help.

This is part 2 of a filmstrip set. Part 1 is preserved here: https://youtu.be/Brh1a6gbfOI

After the seven-minute visual non-sequitur that was part one of "'You Would If You Loved Me:' Making Decisions About Sex," we are lulled into a part two that almost makes sense at the start. Visuals seem to line up and are contextual, and while the occasional odd frame sneaks in, most of it makes perfect sense. But about two-thirds of the way through, the weird visuals return, as if they tried to make a normal filmstrip but ran out of normal images, and with a deadline looming, simply grabbed whatever they could.

While there is one isolated weird image at the beginning - a sign warning that "VD is the most common contagious disease except the common cold" with arrows pointing toward a gauntlet of brown, nude mannequins - the visuals toward the end are pure Guidance Associates. The occasional pastel or negative image slips in. The pictures of couples begin to look like shots from modern drug commercials. And then, suddenly, there's an image of a couple on a couch that looks like a still from that movie "Waking Life," twenty years too soon. Then, as the narrator talks about the horrors of untreated syphilis and gonorrhea, we're back to the weird, with several surrealist images, and a drawing of a Black man with an enormous afro over a discussion of cervical cancer. While the narrator emphasizes the importance of telling one's sexual partners they might have VD, a comic book panel appears with a woman thinking, "I know how you must feel, Brad..." The image choice becomes so random one almost expects to see an elephant eating a burrito while buying a terrible car stereo at the Mount Kisco Radio Shack at some point before it's over.

While the narration is again perfectly sensible, suggesting safe, well-informed sex if abstinence is absolutely not possible, it seems there's always one little problem. In part one, it was the torturous reminder that the word "masturbation" is from the Latin "to pollute with the hand." In this installment, the narrator says "Syphilis and gonorrhea are spread solely by sexual contact, including intercourse and oral-genital sex." Granted, this preservationist wasn't having sex in 1981, but are you absolutely sure, Mr. Narrator, that the commonly-accepted phrase for such an act was "oral-genital
