What's the big 'Hullabaloo' with Shabir about S. 98:6?
Recently two videos have been uploaded by two Muslims, one by a fellow named Farid, and the other by our good friend Dr Shabir Ally, where they both criticized what we said about the variants in Surah 98:6 concerning whether the Warsh rendering of the word al-Baree'a is innocent, or whether it is creatures, which is what we find rendered in the Hafs Qira'at text.
Both Farid and Ally believe there is no contradiction here, and that both could be understood as creature.
Al Fadi had Jay come on his show to dispute their interpretation of Surah 98:6. Al Fadi, a native Arab speaker, from Saudi Arabia, doing his PhD in just these kind of Arabic assessments of the earliest Qur'anic Arab manuscripts, responded that these two different Qira'at renditions have clearly two different spellings which give us two different interpretations, disputing both Farid and Ally's allegations.
They then discussed the whole process of 'peer review', where scholars engage with each other's research and critique it, usually on its own merits. Farid, however, like a growing number of Muslim apologists spent 6 minutes of his 8 minute rebuttal rebuking and hurling vitriol and ad hominems at both Jay and Al Fadi, which simply defeats the purpose of any review, while Dr Ally gave a robust critique of the grammar of the verse itself, engaging with the argument rather than with the persons.
They wondered why Muslim responses to criticisms of the Qur'an lately have fallen into this sort of ad hominem attacks against the persons rather than the argument, and suggested that this may be due to the novelty of this sort of critique of the Qur'an for most Muslims, who have never heard anyone discuss items of this nature in public...what Yasir Qadhi called this red line, beyond which Muslims never go when critiquing the Qur'an, out of respect.
Yet, Muslims are going to have to get used to these sorts of criticisms, because there is so much we have to do yet with the Qur'an, and we're just getting started...applying the same critics to the Qur'an which were previously applied to the Bible. Let's then see where the research leads.

On Sunday, September 6th, while on the ladder at Speaker's Corner, Jay Smith was verbally 'ambushed' by Mansur Ahmed concerning the supposed 'lies' Jay has perpetrated in the past for the dating and authority of the recently discovered Birmingham folios, and other Qur'anic fragments. For around an hour the two of them went back and forth, Mansur accusing Jay for his past 'discretions', while Jay riposted with the problems concerning not only the early dates of the folios, but the late dates for the much more complete and important Qur'anic manuscripts.
Watch the first hour as Jay and Mansur cover areas including:
-Mansur's references to the even earlier Qur'anic folio dates being uncovered in other laboratories (i.e. Lyon, Arizona, Zurich, Oxford and Kiel), four of whose 'median dates' predate Muhammad, the Qur'an, and thus Islam!
-The dating for the earlier Jewish Apocryphal and Christian Sectarian writings, which Jay believes are the material these folios are derived from.
-Jay's response to the Gilgamesh and Atrahasis tablets, claiming the fact that in their simplistic makeup, they point to the more sophisticated and earlier Biblical accounts
-Their debate concerning the makeup, the variants, and the very late 8th century dates for the Topkapi manuscript, and whether 99% or 78% of the manuscript is still intact.
-Mansur's correction that there weren't just 4 canonized manuscripts sent out by Uthman in 650 AD, but 9! This fact delighted Jay, who quickly demanded that Muslims must now find and present at least one of the nine canonized texts, complete and unchanged from 650 AD.
-Mansur's last comment from the ladder where he accidentally suggested the Qur'an was only 1300 years old, a claim Jay readily acknowledges and supports, at least in its crudest form!
In the second hour of the video, Tony Costa, the well known and respected Christian debater from Canada (he has debated Dr. Shabir Ally 12 times) joins Jay on the ladder, and the two of them unpack all the material Mansur either forgot, or refused to talk about, concerning these problematic Qur'anic folios.
It is during this hour that you will understand why it is that Mansur and many of his friends spend so much time dealing with the trivial and incidental minutiae, and so little time on the more important early and late dates of their Qur'anic manuscripts.
Once they unpack this material, Tony then eloquently yet gently responds to questions posed by our good Muslim friend, Adnan Rashid, and a rather loud and proud atheist protagonist.

We continue unpacking the corrections Dr Dan Brubaker has found in the Qur’an, and we come to correction number 10.
Correction Example 10: This example is taken from the Petropolitanus Manuscript (BnF arabe 331, fol. iv.), from Surah 2:137, where we find an insertion of the words “bi mithli” (‘like as’, or ‘similar to’).
The word مثل mithli “as” was omitted when first written, and then was added at a later time, along with the preceding bi, using a completely different hand writing, and a much narrower nib, suggesting a later addition. Note that it has vowels and diacritical marks, which again supports the notion that it was corrected at a later time because when this manuscript was first written, vowels had yet to be invented.
There is a further problem. The bi which was first written was linked along with the letter mā, and has not been erased. So, as it now stands, the portion reads امنوا بمثل بما amanū bi-mithli bi-mā, which is an incorrect and non-viable reading, as it has one too many ‘bi’s.
What’s more, it originally said “If they believe in that which you have believed”, but it now says “If they believe similarly to that which you have believed”, which changes the meaning and the emphasis of the statement as well. Nonetheless, the reason they had to add ‘bi mithli’ was so that it corresponded with our present ‘Hafs’ text.
Correction Example 11: In this example, taken from the Topkapi Manuscript (Topkapi codex, fol. 374v.), we have an insertion of the word for god, ‘Allah’ in Surah 66:8.
This insertion of lām-lām-he (‘Allah’) occurs near the beginning of the verse, since originally, the first allāh of this verse was not present. Yet, it has obviously been added at a later date, and in the margin, outside of the verse itself, and with a completely different nib and ink color, proving it was added at a later time.
Originally it said, “Oh you who believe! Turn to a sincere repentance”. Now it says, “Oh you who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance”. Notice the original ‘alif after the ila uses a larger nib, suggesting an error to the original text. The change has been made with a very small nib and is probably a modern intervention. But as it now stands, it now conforms to the 1924 ‘Hafs’ text.
Correction Example 12: We find here and erasure which was subsequently overwritten in the Petropolitanus manuscript (BnF Arabe 328, fol. 8r), in Surah 3:171.
The ḍad-lām of فضل faḍlin “bounty” has been written over an erasure. What’s curious is that the corrector has used a different nib and a much darker ink than that which was used in the original, and the two letters ‘dad’ and ‘lam’ are elongated so much to accommodate the let

Yet, it seems that there were a number of items which existed before the creation of the Heavens and the Earth. Hatun has been able to unpack as many as 8 items, which she introduces along with Jay Smith at Speaker's Corner.
If this is so, than how can Muslims continue to claim that Allah is indeed ONE?

The 'Sin-Sifters' are a group of 7 men who have been sifting through the Standard Islamic Narrative historically to find if any of it is authentic or not. Each of our 7 sifters have an expertise in one or two areas, and to date each of us come from a different country, including myself from the USA, Mel from Ireland, Murad from the Middle East, Odon from Paris, Joe from Israel, Paul from London, and Thomas from Germany.
We are now ready to introduce our 8th Sin-Sifter, Lloyd DeJongh, who hails from South Africa, though he now lives in Poland.
Lloyd has lived in the Middle East for 11 years, has worked extensively in the world of security, and has engaged often with radical Muslims while in the Middle East. It was because of those face-to-face engagements that over the past 7 years he has carried out research and become an expert on 'Shariah Law' (also known as the 4 schools of 'Fiqh'), as well as an expert on the Biography of Muhammad (know as Sira).
It is in this capacity that he has been invited to join our group, to help us unpack how Islamic law and the prophet's biography were created, and subsequently became so integral and foundational for the historical origins of Islam.

Joe, a good friend from 'Red Judaism' (see the URL below) has come to help us understand the external influences concerning the origins of Islam, from a Jewish perspective.
In this episode, he begins by proposing that Islam's stories and artefacts don't belong to Islam, but in fact mostly come from types of Judaism.
Starting in the WEST:
But to understand that, you need to begin with the early part of the 7th century,
and look towards the Western area of what is the Middle East today, where two great empires, the Byzantine and Persian empires were in conflict.
In that early period, the Byzantine emperor, Phocus forced the Jews under his control to convert to Christianity. Many including the Messianic Hebrews of Beit Alpha didn't want to so they fled to Persia.
Khosrow II, the king of Persia at that time executed the Jewish Exilarch (leader in Exile) and replaces him with Nehemiah ben Hushiel (an exelark) who belonged to a Jewish sect like the Sadducees, known for their literalistic reading of the Bible, and rejecting the more edifying Mishnah interpretation (i.e. the more radical form of Judaism).
According to the Stellarium Astronomy Software, on the 3rd of March 610 AD, at around 7:30 p.m. the planet Mars came out from behind the New Moon, which was considered a good omen to go to war (as Mars was considered the god of war).
So, Khosrow II orders Nehemiah to attack the holy lands, which they willingly do, as they would then have their holy land back. They are victorious and they go into Jerusalem and slaughter tens of thousands of Christians, and immediately go to the temple mount to begin rebuilding the temple there.
Khosrow II, however, declares himself the "greatest god" which angers Nehemiah and his Sadducee-Jewish followers, whereupon Khasrow II, in 618AD has them all exiled, and sent up to Edessa (situated in southern Turkey today).
Meanwhile in the EAST:
According to 7thC. evidence we know that some time between the years 618 - 622 AD is the "Year of the Arab", when an independence movement by the Arabs against the Persians occurred.
Chinese sources in 651 AD (known as the 'Jiu Tang Shu') support this 'Year of the Arab', saying that this year was when a "lion man" provided armour to the "camel herders" (i.e. the Arabs) in Persia.
Al-Tabari (who died in 923AD), speaks of this story where Nu'man, the last Lakhmid King of
Hira (in what is today called Iraq) gives his armoury to Hani ibn Qabisa, and refers to the battle which ensued as the "battle of Dhi Qar" and that it happened in 620 AD.
The Arab person was known as Hani ibn Qabisa, who inherits the armour and goes to war against Khosrow II's representative Iyas ibn Qabisa, the new King of Hira, and defeats him. So, one Ibn Qabisa defeats the other Ibn Qabisa.

In this first part of Lecture one on the Qibla we go into the Historical background concerning why so many of the earliest Qiblas (direction of prayer) are not facing Mecca at all, but were all facing Petra, in Jordan, up to 706 AD.
We look at and explain that the earliest Qiblas were chosen not for religious reasons, but for political ecpediency, something the later Muslims didn't understand.
From there we went into what we think really happened in the 7th and 8th centuries, leading up to the takeover and control by the Abbasids in 749 AD, who then created their own political narrative, destroying any historical evidence for the earlier Umayyad dynasty, and introducing their own man, Muhammad, their own book, the Qur'an, and their own sanctuary, Mecca, all of which were situated in the wrong place and at the wrong time.
Watch this episode to get the background to the political intrigue which existed in these two formative centuries, and then move on to the next segment of this first lecture, where we unpack how the later Abbasid Mecca borrowed and usurped the stages of the Hajj (pilgrimage), hoping to eradicate any references or vestiges of the earlier Petran sanctuary.

Sadiq Khan said in 2004 that he believed parts of Shariah law were appropriate for UK law. But is this so, and has anyone investigated whether Shariah is relevant for UK law?
Jay and Hatun decided to find out. So they used three areas of authority; the Qur'an (Islam's primary authority), the Hadith (Islam's second criteria for authority) and two schools of Islamic law (the Maliki and Hanafi schools of Fish), comparing them to UK law.
All they had to do was quote from all three authorities and ask the large crowd gathered there to give their opinion of what they were hearing...and they certainly gave it!
Watch the Muslims in particular as they tried constantly to interrupt and yell over Jay and Hatun. But it didn't work, as the two of them simply referred to quote after quote from the three sources, and asked a barrister standing on their left whether any of the quotes would be relevant to UK law, and in every case he answered in the negative.
It is clear from this video that Shariah law (according to the original sources) is simply not applicable for a modern 21st century Judeo-Christian modelled country, as the UK is.
