During his tenure at Intel they’re gone from 14nm way down to 14nm processes, and lost Apple’s Mac business. Intel is now looking at outsourcing much of their i3 efficiency chips to TSMC using their 5nm process so they have some chance of power efficiency, which feels like both a great decision as well as admission of defeat. Intel also unveiled AlderLake chips which have the ARM style bigLITTLE design which are set to release late in 2021, but honestly, based on intel’s recent track record, who expects them to be on time? Samsung’s Unpacked show is today, and they told the world about it via iPhone Filed under my “well, that’s funny”, Samsung yesterday announced details about today’s Samsung Unpacked event via iPhone, forgetting that Twitter doesn’t like keeping their secrets any more than they do. They tweeted about the event forgetting that using twitter on iPhone does tell people that that was what you did at the bottom. Again. I know, it was probably a now fired external marketing agency that published the tweet, but it just underscores, as do all the similar celebrity tweets from iPhones about their Samsung and other Android phone sponsorships, that when people have a choice and the means, they generally prefer iPhone. If there’s any actual surprises at today’s Unpacked event, we’ll let you know, but it seems that even more leaked about the Galaxy S21 range than did for the iPhone 12, and yes, of course they’re taking the charger out of the box too, and saying its for the environment. DylanDKT has tweeted that Apple Silicon’s transition will wrap up with the Mac Pro. Okay, I don’t think that’s too much of a shock, but Dylan also mentions that the Apple Silicon Mac Pro is going to be using an evolution of the M1 platform, not M2. That makes complete sense to me, even though I believe M2 will be out in the spring, there’s nothing to say that Apple wouldn’t pursue higher performance chips with older names. There’s been a lot of push back when I’ve suggested this as the Mac Pro “should” have the fastest single core performance given the price, but that wouldn’t line up with what Apple did under intel - the single core performance in all of the Xeon Mac Pros is beaten by a couple of iMacs and even the 2020 13” MacBook Pro. The types of task that these machines are asked to provide are typically more reliant on multithreaded workflows, and with up to 40 CPU cores and 128 GPU cores, that is stuff these can handily take care of. My expectation is that we still see the Mac Pro at WWDC in June, but with it shipping later in the year. Dylan also mentioned that Apple will replace the 13” MacBook Pro with a 14” display, which I’d also suggested in the previous months. There seems to be some confusion as to why, but I think this makes total sense. Lets be honest, there wasn’t enough differentiation between the M1 MacBook Air and the M1 MacBook Pro that will be replaced with this new device. They had the same connectivity, the same display (close as makes no difference, one was a little brighter), the same webcam, the same keyboard and the same trackpad. The MacBook Pro did get a Touch Bar, longer battery and a noisier cooling system though. Enter the M2 and the 14” chassis however and it will have a bigger, much better display, a better webcam, better connectivity, most likely an even better battery and that new design. I think it could be $200 more, starting at 1499, and that seems pretty reasonable. Let me know your thoughts. And in terms of when stuff is coming, I had a really fun discussion with Vadim from Max Tech yesterday on Twitter - I mentioned that I’m hoping for the M2 Pro in the spring, with M2 Pro and Max in the Autumn. He’s thinking M2 not until the fall, with M2 Pro & Max in 2023. Is Apple REALLY working on a bigger 30+” iMac, and if so, why? and When? And… Who? What will Apple’s M3 rollout look like, And, AirPods, the next frontier for Apple Health? I thought I’d get back to our roots with this one and i ‘m trying to use it as a reset too, so get your questions in with iCaveAnswers in the comments, and let’s get into it. Big iMacs. According to Marc Gurman, Apple is currently working on a bigger, “30+” iMac” which I think we’d all been hoping for when the iMac redesign happened with the M1 model at 24”. Prior to the M1 iMac release, Intel based models were offered in 21.5” and 27” variants with 4k and 5k resolutions respectively, and the new M1 model boasts 4.5k resolution. But remember when it arrived and everyone was hating on the off-white bezels? Well, I love them and hope they’re here to stay, but, is it possible that Apple’s skipped the M2 chip for iMac while it reworked these to have darker colours and bezels? It’d look pretty epic in Midnight like the MacBook Air I have to say. I was kind of convinced that Apple was doing as they did with the OG iMac and just having the one size for the consumer desktop, but the addition of a 15” MacBook Air makes me think this could be real. Even though there’s been no mention of this thing from Ross Displayman Young as far as I know - Apple was working on more displays, and perhaps their designers have pivoted to include a computer with this display. 30+ inches could easily enough be 32, which is 6K Pro Display XDR territory, and if the display is going to be physically larger than the old biggest iMac, It stands to reason the resolution would be likely to increase too. I wouldn’t hold your breath for an iMac Pro however, not in the way we had before. Apple’s Intel iMac Pro was a stop-gap measure while the Trashcan Mac Pro was taken out to the field, shot and melted down for glue ahead of the current design Cheesegrater that they released a couple of years later. That spot in the lineup is being held down now by the Mac Studio, paired up with an Apple display. That holds the more powerful chips, M2 Max and Ultra, though now the Mac mini is configur able with up to an M2 Pro chip, there’s a decent chance that could appear in both sizes of iMac going forward from the M3 generation. The 24” version features active cooling, so there would be little difficulty putting a pro level chip in there and even more thermal capacity in the 30+” version. In essence, don’t expect a Max or ultra chip in an iMac, but base level and pro chips make sense to me. And speaking of M3, what’s that rollout going to look like? Well I think the iMac may well be at the forefront of the releases this time, and perhaps as soon as this fall, but only in the current 24” chassis as the larger version is likely to be a little way out yet. MacBook Air is the only model likely to be limited to only the base M3 chip, but given the recent 15” model release and price drop on the 13” model, I can’t see these getting the new chip until at least early 2024, and I certainly don’t see just the 13” model getting a chip bump before the 15”. An M3 Mac mini could be on the cards, with an M3 Pro model coming early in 2024 alongside the M3 Pro and Max MacBook Pros, but we’re also hearing that the 13” MacBook Pro still won’t let go and move towards the light - so this could be the portable model that Apple releases with M3’s first round, touchbar and all. I don’t see a good reason for anyone to choose it right now, but being the only laptop with an M3 at the outset may well be one of the few ways to make it mildly interesting. And onto AirPods, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing multiple threads of health features for the AirPods Pro. First, Gurman doubles down on the Temperature sensors, the ear is an ideal place to get a core temperature reading, far better than the Apple Watch’s wrist measurements. That said, its pretty uncomfortable trying to get the Apple Watch in your ear. Believe me. While the Apple Watch is able to get continuous measurements as it’s worn pretty consistently, most people use their AirPods multiple times a day so there should still be enough data, and given the more accurate measurement position, these could alert you to a fever with good reliability. Of course, there’s something else your ears can be useful for, which is hearing. Apple, according to Gurman is working on not only the ability to use the AirPods as a form of hearing aid, but also for assessing your hearing by playing different tones and sounds.
