Maybe that’s why hedgehogs, which can be as small as a credit card in length, are kept as pets in some homes. But you may want to think twice if you’re considering one for your family, especially if you have small children. Hedgehogs have been able to stick around for 58 million years, partly due to the fact that they are covered in over 5,000 defensive spines. Their prickly surface makes them more difficult for predators to eat, but this same defense system can destry you and your loved ones. If that’s not enough to deter you, the creatures carry ringworm, salmonella, and other scary diseases you probably don’t want to be associated with. Koala If you’ve ever wanted to visit Australia, you may have wanted to see the country’s cuddly marsupial, the Koala. Known for its status as a cute, tree-hugger, many people flock to see these creatures in person. However, these cuddly looking animals are far from peaceful. Their cuddly disposition is actually just a way of regulating temperature. What’s more is that these animals can be very aggressive, even when you might be trying to help them. There are countless stories of people being bitten, scratched, and mauled by Koalas. Their sharp teeth and claws are nothing to joke about. And if you’re unfortunate enough to encounter a Koala’s urine, you might just contract chlamydia. That’s right. These seemingly-lovable marsupials are at high risk for chlamydia which can be transferred to humans through contact with their urine. Seal Ever wonder what it’s like to swim with the seals? Afterall, they look like big teddy bears of the sea. Maybe you even want to reach out and pet one of these lovable marine mammals, but it turns out these sea creatures are better left alone. They can be aggressive when approached. A bite from an adorable seal is said to have the force of a rottweiler’s bite. If you did reach out to touch a seal, you might just find yourself having to get your hand amputated from a possibly infectious bite called seal fingers. One volunteer’s encounter in the Norfolk coast ended in hospitalization from a seal bite. So it’s probably better to swim away from a seal if you see one. Jerboa If you’ve ever had a pet hamster or known someone who has, then you know just how adorable these rodents can be. The Jerboa, an African rodent, looks very similar to the cute hamster, but you won’t want one of these darlings in your house. While the Jerboa may look like another friendly hamster, they are illegal to keep as pets, and for good reason. These furry rodents carry a disease called monkeypox. And despite the name, monkeypox is typically found in rodents. So what’s so dangerous about monkeypox? The disease can be spread to humans. A milder version of the deadly smallpox, monkeypox has no known cure or effective treatment. Surubi This is a very large cousin of the cat fish! known by many names such as bagre in Colombia or zungaro in Peru. it can grow so large as to trick people into thinking they are seeing a small shark. This nocturnal hunter will eat anything that crosses its path can be found in many rivers in s.a. The Surubi is very important for the fishing industry as its very abundant. Unfortunately, uncontrolled fishing had led to the disappearance of some of its species. The Majestic Vulture The most iconic south american bird as well as the largest flying bird in the world, meet the Andean condor. With a wing span of about 10 ft. this bird lives in areas where the wind is very strong so to glide through the air effortlessly not only in the mountains but also near coastal areas where thermal air currents are common. The Andean condors only produce one egg every 2 years and the babies take 6-8 years to reach full adulthood. It sound long but they live up to 50 years in the wild.
