Degeneration and Revolution: Radical Cultural Politics and the Body in Weimar Germany
Author: Robert Heynen File Type: pdf In Degeneration and Revolution Radical Cultural Politics and the Body in Weimar Germany Robert Heynen explores the impact of conceptions of degeneration, exemplified by eugenics and social hygiene, on the social, cultural, and political history of the left in Germany, 1914-33. Hygienic practices of bodily regulation were integral to the extension of modern capitalist social relations, and profoundly shaped Weimar culture. Heynens innovative interdisciplinary approach draws on Marxist and other critical traditions to examine the politics of degeneration and socialist, communist, and anarchist responses. Drawing on key Weimar theorists and addressing artistic and cultural movements ranging from Dada to worker-produced media, this book challenges us to rethink conventional understandings of left culture and politics, and of Weimar culture more generally. **

More than 400 alphabetically listed entries identify and explain the characters, events, and important places of Norse mythology. From BooklistThise well-received and accessible book for young adults has been updated. It is part of an expanded Mythology A to Z series that also includes volumes on Egyptian (2000), Japanese (2003), and Greek and Roman mythology (2003). Other volumes will cover African, Celtic, Chinese, Native American, and South and Meso-American mythologies. Norse Mythology A to Z contains approximately 400 entries with almost 70 new topics. Like other volumes in the series, it features occasional black-and-white illustrations--some full page--a detailed index, and extensive cross-referencing. It also offers a bibliography of mainly adult-level books published the past several decades. Not as visually enticing as the DK Illustrated Dictionary of Mythology Heroes, Heroines, Gods, and Goddesses from around the World (DK, 1998), and featuring dictionary-type articles as opposed to retellings of legends or sagas, this nevertheless serves as a solid, reliable starting point for student research. Mythology remains a curriculum mainstay and a topic of perennial student interest. Collections that purchased the earlier version have probably noticed considerable wear and tear and will want to update. Other libraries that serve students in grades 4 through 10 should seriously consider the titles in this basic reference set. RBB American Library Association. lt

The current model of parental discipline is as outdated as a rotary phone. Why dont our kids do what we want them to do? Parents often take the blame for misbehavior, but this obscures a broader trend in our modern, highly connected age, children have less self-control than ever. About half of the current generation of children will develop a mood or behavioral disorder or a substance addiction by age eighteen. Contemporary kids need to learn independence and responsibility, yet our old ideas of punishments and rewards are preventing this from happening. To stem this growing crisis of self-regulation, journalist and parenting expert Katherine Reynolds Lewis articulates what she calls The Apprenticeship Model, a new theory of discipline that centers on learning the art of self-control. Blending new scientific research and powerful individual stories of change, Lewis shows that, if we trust our children to face consequences, they will learn to adapt and moderate their own behavior. She watches as chaotic homes become peaceful, bewildered teachers see progress, and her own family grows and evolves in light of these new ideas. Youll recognize your own family in Lewiss sensitive, realistic stories, and youll find a path to making everyone in your home more capable, kinder, and happier--including yourself.

In 1215, more than 570 years before the United States ratified its Bill of Rights, Englands barons forced King John to accept the Magna Carta. In 1926 over 1.5 million strikers brought the nation to its knees. From the Peasants Revolt to the suffragettes, from Oliver Cromwell to Arthur Scargill, this ground-breaking and hugely enjoyable book describes a rich and continuous tradition of resistance, rebellion and radicalism, of violent and charismatic individuals with axes to grind, and of social eruptions and political earthquakes that have shaped Englands whole culture and character. **

Most Americans would never willingly revisit their high school experiences the nations school systems reflect the broader societys hierarchical emphasis on race, class, and gender. While schools purport to provide equal opportunities for all students, this rarely happens in actualityparticularly for girls. In Downed by Friendly Fire, Signithia Fordham unmasks and examines female-centered bullying in schools, arguing that it is essential to unmask female aggression, bullying, and competition, all of which directly relate to the structural violence embedded in the racialized and gendered social order. For two and a half years, Fordham conducted field research at Underground Railroad High School, a suburban high school in upstate New York. Through a series of composite student profiles, she examines the girls relationships to academic achievement, social competition, and aggression toward one another. Fordham argues that girls academically compete to lose, which only perpetuates their subordination through the misrecognition of their own competitive behaviors. She goes further to expand the meaning of violence to include what is seen as normal, including suffering, humiliation, and social and economic abuse. Using the concept symbolic violence, Fordham theorizes the psychological and social damage suffered especially by black girls in schools. The five narratives in Downed by Friendly Fire ultimately highlight the pain and suffering this violence produces as well as the ways in which it promotes inequality, exclusion, and marginalization among girls. **

The Renaissance was a diverse phenomenon, marked by innovation and economic expansion, the rise of powerful rulers, religious reforms, and social change. Encompassing the entire continent, Renaissance Architecture examines the rich variety of buildings that emerged during these seminal centuries of European history. Although marked by the rise of powerful individuals, both patrons and architects, the Renaissance was equally a time of growing group identities and communities -- and architecture provided the public face to these new identities. Religious reforms in northern Europe, spurred on by Martin Luther, rejected traditional church function and decoration, and proposed new models. Political ambitions required new buildings to satisfy court rituals. Territory, nature, and art intersected to shape new landscapes and building types. Classicism came to be the international language of an educated architect and an ambitious patron, drawing on the legacy of ancient Rome. Yet the richness of the medieval tradition continued to be used throughout Europe, often alongside classical buildings. Examining each of these areas by turn, this book offers a broad cultural history of the period as well as a completely new approach to the history of Renaissance architecture. The work of well-known architects such as Michelangelo and Andrea Palladio is examined alongside lesser known though no less innovative designers such as Juan Guas in Portugal and Benedikt Ried in Prague and Eastern Europe. Drawing on the latest research, it also covers more recent areas of interest such as the story of women as patrons and the emotional effect of Renaissance buildings, as well as the impact of architectural publications and travel on the emerging new architectural culture across Europe. As such, it provides a compelling introduction to the subject for all those interested in the history of architecture, society, and culture in the Renaissance, and European culture in general.**
