?The Misinformation Age: How False Beliefs Spread By Cailin O'Connor and James Owen Weatherall (2019) INTRODUCTION: The Vegetable Lamb of Tartary CHAPTER ONE: What Is Truth? A review and summary of The Misinformation Age (the introduction and chapter one). Comment if you want you the rest of the book done! The book The Misinformation Age, by authors O’Connor and Weatherall, goes over “how false beliefs [are] spread” just as the title implies. The authors use a great deal of examples, drawing parallels between ancient fables (the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary) to modern-day political issues (the Pope endorsing Trump). The objective of the book is to show the reader that due to a number of variables, it can be difficult to trust information as it is given to us (through things like propaganda, or ad/pr). Many of the examples used in the book highlight how information can go through a series of challenges, and if one wants to sway the information in any way then this would involve creating uncertainty. Throughout the book, and brought up in the introduction, is “Bayes’ Rule” – when developing information, we (scientists) go through a succession of beliefs and evidence – with new evidence, we update our beliefs, and this is called credence. Moving to a large scale, scientists generate theories with their credences on information and then the government acts upon what the scientists say. When there are wrenches thrown into this mix, such as biased scientists, misinterpreted research, the wrong scientific methods, or even Big Business, then “false beliefs [are] spread” and the government is acting upon the wrong information. We used Canson XL Watercolor paper, the chipboard back on the sketchbook, cardboard, some glue, string (floss), and tape. We made the thickest sketchbooks ever, and the one with the chipboard knocks like a hardcover. I'm so pumped to decorate mine! Personally, this is like the twentieth book I've made, and I'm happier with the outcome every time. I think next time we're going to do an exposed Coptic stitch because the stitch is so beautiful!! In this video, we glue on cardboard covers, so that later we can go in and modge podge the creep out of them. Collage designs take so much time in cutting and placing the pieces, that I decided it needs its own video!!
