What is a crypto fork?

In the cryptocurrency world there are soft forks and there are hard forks? Forks are upgrades to an existing blockchain. The upgrade can be backward compatible by staying on the chain and upgrading the basic code of that chain (soft fork) or adding new code to a chain and moving away from the original blockchain completely (hard fork), which is not backward compatible.

A good example is the Ethereum / Ethereum Classic fork.

Ethereum Classic is actually the original Ethereum change and Ethereum broke away or hard forked away with a whole new set of code that is not backwards compatible.
