The difference is that Ethereum supports hundreds if not thousands of smaller crypto projects via ERC20 tokens. If Ethereum goes down the majority of cryptocurrency projects which began as ICO's last year will also fail. But is Ethereum too big to fail? hmmm... If any crypto project was too big to fail then yes it is Ethereum, not even Bitcoin is as important as Ethereum to the Crypto Industry.
