The molding fits tight against or even touches the painted surface, which causes clear coat to fill in the gap or crack between the molding and paint surface.   When the paint coatings are dried and the masking tape is removed, the clearcoat will have a rough edge.   There are several ways to avoid this in the paint shop.  If the glass molding is soft and flexible enough a small diameter rope can be used by fitting underneath the molding. 3M makes a tape that can be used that lifts the molding as well.
