Having just updated my Jeenodes with the Optiboot bootloader, I had some LED strings to play with. SPI controllable, the only thing to worry about was the interrupt driven RFM12B also attached to the SPI bus. Thankfully the FastSPI library already wraps all the important functions in cli() and sei() calls.
As evident, Optiboot boots like lightning, and the FastSPI library can fiddle bits at a fair rate of knots.

Thanks to some pretty woeful traffic management decisions by @glasgowcc (Glasgow City Council), this is the end result at rush hour Northbound at the Squinty Bridge. I had just left STV after meeting a friend, and was surrounded by people doing U-turns across the road.
