Who invented the so-called "Chinese portrait style" in photography after this new visual technology reached China in the mid-19th century? What did such an "invention" mean at this particular historical moment? This talk speculates on these and other questions by focusing on Milton Miller's career as a transnational photographer and the creation of his China portraits.
