Most of the year Edogawa Koen is your average small Tokyo park stuck between buildings with a gentle little river. Once a year it turns into a magnificent oasis of flowers during the Hanami season. Thanks to its hundreds of Sakura (Cherry trees) each year Edogawa Koen turns just for a few days, into a small patch of cotton candy transforming the area into an oasis of peaceful bliss and color.

Located by lake Towada right in the center of Aomori prefecture, this Shinto shrine is recognized as a holy place in Aomori. Built according to the authorities in 807, Towada Shrine was previously famous as being dedicated to the god of water, Azure Dragon, known as Seiryu in Japanese. However, today, the shrine now honors Yamato Takeru who was a legendary Japanese prince in the Yamato dynasty and the son of Emperor Keiko.
What makes Towada Shrine so special, besides its vibrant history, is by far its amazing forest path known as "Suginami", a shortened version of the word from the Edo period “Suginamiki”, which can be translated as "avenue of Cedars".

Located at the foot of Mount Hachiman in Shiga prefecture, and a few meters away from the Hachiman Bori canal, Himure Hachimangu Shrine is the largest shrine in Omihachiman. It was first established in 131 by Takenouchi no Sukune. In 275 Emperor Ojin visited the shrine and had a divine vision. He saw two sacred rings around the sun that later lead to the name of the shrine “Himure no Yashiro Hachimangu”, which means Sun Gathering Shrine.
It was during the reign of Empress Jito (690-697) the shrine was renamed Himure Shrine after a famous poem.

Kyu-Chikurin-In is a former temple located near the prefectural city of Otsu in Shiga prefecture. It’s located just a few minutes away from Kyoto Station. While no longer a temple, the place has been turned into a "Satobo" or retirement house for the priest of Enryaku-Ji temple which is located on top of Mt. Hiei and overlooking Kyu-Chikurin-In.
While Kyu-Chikurin-In is a beautiful and classic Japanese house, it is its small garden and many tea ceremony houses that make the place so popular among local tourists.

What used to be a small island is Usuki city and its most beautiful castle. The Usuki Castle ruin and its keep are today a nice and quiet park overlooking the city. The only part of the gates, its turrets, and a small temple remain of the main structure.

Often wrongly credited as one of the many beautiful temples of Kyoto, Enryakuji, is actually located on top of Mount Hieizan in Shiga prefecture. It is properly credited however as one of the most important monasteries in Japanese history as well as being the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism. Many influential monks studied at Enryakuji, including the founders the Pure Land (Jodo), Zen and Nichiren sects.
Enryakuji Temple was initially founded in 788 by Saicho, the monk who introduced Tendai Buddhism from China and features as many as 3,000 other temples. Enryakuji Temple is also famous for its past army of warrior monks (僧兵 sōhei) who often engaged in power struggles with other monasteries and political leaders in Kyoto, as a counterbalance to power hungry individuals.
Note : Enryakuji Tem main hall is undergoing some renovation and will be covered by scaffolding until at least 2026.
