For the 2006 National Rainbow Gathering in Colorado, I captured footage with five super 8 cartridges, which equaled a nine minute film. I should have taken more film on that trip! Not yet satisfied with the outcome, I returned to the 2008 National Rainbow Gathering, in Wyoming, with six more cartridges. Instead of showing everything that I filmed, I consolidated the eleven reels of material into a short film of about eleven minutes running time. Two of the cartridges were the new "Vision 2" super 8 film...a much better film stock. The film that appears really good (without a black border) is that footage. As well, I attempted to incorporate two dolls into the film: "Groovy Guy" (a G.I. Joe doll) and "Gothic Girl" (a Barbie type doll). I have those dolls in other films of mine and thought the gathering would be a nice place to take them! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhSRsZZ4llY

RETRO TUBE: An experimental web series, using VHS analog video and super 8 and super 16mm film. The basic idea is convey the pros and cons of the TV experience back in the day. Receptivity was often poor or impossible...but it would tease you, as it came and went. Moreover, one would have to be present when a program was scheduled, making us revolve around the time frame, which is basically the opposite experience today. AND, the selection was WAY less with a mere 13 channels, and local UHF programs that would often put you to sleep. But, we appreciated it more, as we had to fight for our programs, and often forced to manually change channels. Today, the main fight seems to be finding anything meaningful in an endless ocean of programs. At least today's flat screens are better...or are they?
We are using old stock footage and/or recording new footage, using old schools cameras, You, as the viewer, shall basically see the channel surfing as though you were watching TV 30 years ago.
Most of the footage here was shot specifically for this project, with VHS and super VHS, in North Carolina and Denver. The super 8 and super 16 footage stems from a wide variety of older projects from Reel Groovy Films.

Gaia (Mother Earth) challenges The Last Diva on Earth, who stubbornly resists the need to transcend her dominant position into a spiritual one.
This was a crazy shoot, as it was WAY windy and the pyramid was a five hour trip to access (remote area in Wyoming) and I got stuck on top of the pyramid, almost requiring the assistance of what I assume would be a costly helicopter rescue, then fine for trespassing -- Almost always harder to get down from a structure that was nearly impossible to get up.
I did this after swearing I'd never risk life and limb again, with such a stunt, but those temptations to get that "one shot," are often overwhelming! Thankful to be alive =)

Cyborg Police Robot hunts an escaped Trash Can Dispenser Unit, leading to an unlikely conclusion.
I nearly ditched this film. For the shoot, I had the usual shot list/basic outline, but it turned out very different than my original vision. It was designed to be a narrative! Luckily, I discovered a sound track that was a perfect fit for a film that became more experimental (and silent) in nature.
As an after thought, a GOPRO digita camera was used to convey the robot's perspective, and that alleviated the additional problems of telling the story with the insufficient amount of super 8 footage I had.
