Here are my 12 choices for roses you can propagate by cuttings without having to worry about patents. They also happen to be great roses that perform well on their own roots (don't need to be grafted). For background, you may have seen plant tags that say something like "Unlicensed Propagation Prohibited" on newer releases of roses and other plants. That's because a rose breeder/introducer is given granted 20 years of exclusive rights to propagate that plant. There are, however, many thousands of fantastic roses that were never patented or where the patent has expired. They form the backbone of the offerings at my small nursery, and there's no reason individual gardeners shouldn't try out some cuttings of their own! There are a few things roses don’t love about growing indoors (typically): lower light levels, reduced air circulation, and indoor humidity can be quite low - particularly when the home is being heated in winter or using air conditioning in summer. Add to that the challenges of growing your plants in containers, and it means you’ll have to work a little harder to keep your roses healthy and growing well indoors. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done - and I never let common sense get in my way before, so in this video I’ll set up a trial of 16 roses outside, and a matched set of 16 in a grow tent and under an LED grow lamp provided to me by Mars Hydro. Winter is a secret weapon for us in temperate climates! Insect pest, fungus and bacteria become inactive along with our roses & other garden plants, leaving us an opening to disinfect and sanitize for the coming season. For plants (like roses) with known susceptibility to a range of foliar diseases, this is an opportunity I don't want to waste - so I spray susceptible varieties with dormant oil & lime sulphur. Scrape a little extra skin or bark from the base of your cuttings? It's sometimes called "scoring" and it's a common bit of plant propagation advice. As with so many methods, the answer of whether you should give it a try comes down to the variety, and your willingness to experiment. I find that most shrubs and perennials root fairly easily with basic techniques, and without scoring. If I get good results without the extra handling, why change it up? Because there are likely difficult-to-root varieties where this method will make the difference between success and failure.
