This video covers installing and running Fallout 4 on Linux using Steam Proton, as well as a fix for silent NPC audio and cracking audio. https://www.protondb.com/app/377160 Historically Fallout 4 has been a bit of pain to get working on Linux and required several tweaks in order to run correctly, especially if you use mouse and keyboard in a dual monitor setup. However the latest version of Proton has eliminated all but one of these annoyances, leaving a single tweak required for enabling the audio of NPCs and fixing the crackling audio in game. This tweak is adding the following argument in the game custom launch options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command% Once this is applied, then you will find the game will launch and perform well on Linux. Alternatively you can use GloriousEggroll's Proton-GE build that includes the above fixes. https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom PERFORMANCE Through playing, I have noticed slight FPS drops when transitioning to new areas on the map, but this only impacts the experience for a microsecond. I suspect the reason for this is the shader cache being compiled on the fly in Linux. There is also a chance that if you exit the game direct to desktop, the game will crash the Wine instance, therefore I recommend that you exit to the main menu first, and then to desktop. as this can crash the game.
