Estatus social, en sociología, describe la posición social que un individuo ocupa dentro de una sociedad o en un grupo social de personas. El estatus social es el respeto relativo, la competencia y la diferencia otorgada a las personas, grupos y organizaciones en una sociedad.
Estas creencias sobre quién es más o menos valorado (por ejemplo, honorable, respetable, inteligente) se comparten ampliamente entre los miembros de una sociedad.
Como tal, las personas usan jerarquías de estatus para decidir quién tiene la posibilidad de "controlar", quién es digno.
