Software-Defined Radio: Try Before You Buy? SDRplay RSPdx Live - Shortwave and VHF, UHF

My new SDRplay RSPdx software-defined radio receiver is live, via http://www.sdrspace.com/Version-3, using the SDR Console software (Version 3).
The receivers are online whenever I am not transmitting and when there are no local thunderstorms.
Antenna Port A is a wire antenna (100'), while Antenna Port B is a VHF/UHF discone. Both have an AM Broadcast band reject filter, reducing local AM Broadcast signals by about 30 to 40 dB. I need to use these because the very close KLIN transmitting tower is just miles away and those signals overwhelm the receiver. When I use the signal filters, the local AM Broadcasting signals no longer overwhelm the receiver.

To use my receiver: Install the latest version of SDR-Console which can be downloaded from https://www.sdr-radio.com/download
Install SDR Console according to the directions given. Once you have the software installed, you will want to add my server. It takes a little to get familiar with the software, but there are online FAQs on how to begin.
My server is known as, '0 NW7US' -- it will be online when I am not using my antenna systems for transmitting. It will be offline during thunderstorms, or during times when I must use the systems for transmitting.
Software-defined radio is a great way to hear all sorts of communications, from local AM broadcast stations, FM stations, VHF Air Traffic, to shortwave radio stations including amateur radio HF communications.

As an amateur radio hobbyist, I enjoy communicating with stations from around the world, using radio waves that are reflected off of the Ionosphere. One of the modes of communications we use on shortwave radio spectrum is known as, "Olivia."
Olivia MFSK is an amateur radioteletype protocol designed to work in difficult (low signal-to-noise ratio plus multipath propagation) conditions on shortwave bands. The signal can still be properly copied when it is buried 10 dB below the noise floor (i.e. when the amplitude of the noise is just over 3 times that of the signal). It is commonly used by amateur radio operators to reliably transmit ASCII characters over noisy channels using the high frequency (3-30MHz) spectrum.
Olivia modes are commonly referred to as Olivia X / Y (or, alternatively, Olivia Y / X ), where X refers to the number of different audio tones transmitted and Y refers to the bandwidth in hertz over which these signals are spread. Examples of common Olivia modes are 16/500, 32/1000 and 8/250.
Using computer sound card technology, an amateur radio operator may use this digital mode with just a simple radio-to-computer interface. This mode works well with low to moderate power levels (less than 100 watts of transmit power).

http://sunspotwatch.com/ -- Watch the march of sunspots across the visible solar surface from January 1 through January 23 as seen by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). This view is at the 4500-Angstrom wavelength, taken by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA).
The sunspots are the dark "spots" seen to emerge and disappear again. These dark areas on the sun are "cooler" areas (relative to the surrounding plasma), and are caused by a restriction of the natural convection that occurs inside the sun. This restriction of convection is caused by magnetic interaction at those locations.
Sunspot activity has been measured for over 400 years, and we've come to expect about an eleven-year cycle between periods when very few sunspots emerge, to a period when sunspot activity is prolific. Right now, we're at the very beginning of the new sunspot cycle, Cycle 24.

A view from the Moon's far side, using a short focal length that makes the distant Earth look small. The camera is fixed to the Moon's surface.
This video shows us a view of the far side of the moon. The "dark side of the moon!"
Many of us ask, "what the other side of the Moon looks like, the side that can't be seen from the Earth? This video answers that question.
Just like the near side, the far side goes through a complete cycle of phases. But the terrain of the far side is quite different. It lacks the large dark spots, called maria, that make up the familiar Man in the Moon on the near side. Instead, craters of all sizes crowd together over the entire far side. The far side is also home to one of the largest and oldest impact features in the solar system, the South Pole-Aitken basin, visible here as a slightly darker bruise covering the bottom third of the disk.
The far side was first seen in a handful of grainy images returned by the Soviet Luna 3 probe, which swung around the Moon in October, 1959. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter was launched fifty years later, and since then it has returned hundreds of terabytes of data, allowing LRO scientists to create extremely detailed and accurate maps of the far side.

This video is a capture of analog television signals by radio amateur operator, XE1FAS ( https://www.qrz.com/db/xe1fas ), in Puebla, Mexico (Grid Square EK09). XE1FAS is the call sign of Alejandro Walls Segura. Alejandro was receiving these signals from the Colombian television channel 4 broadcasts on VHF, via tropospheric propagation. He was using a three-element XQ Quad antenna (a type of beam antenna). That's quite the distance for a VHF television signal! Not only that, but analog television has become extinct in the United States of America, and other countries. Capturing any analog television signals now is extremely rare!

An M-class (M1.0) X-ray flare erupted at about 1818 UTC, on August 7, 2010. It peaked at 1824 UTC at M1.0. This movie is a series of filtered views of the event in the active sunspot region 11093, as seen by SDO AIA. This flare is 10 times more powerful than the C-class flare on August 1, 2010 - the flare that caused so much media attention on August 3 through August 5, due to aurora and anticipation.
A metric type II burst was observed in Humain (Belgium) starting around 1809 UTC, and initial crude analysis reveals a possible full-halo coronal mass ejection that may arrive between August 9 and August 10, causing geomagnetic disturbance.
