Today we touch upon another topic which has been a point of controversy all through viz, "Is Liposuction helpful for PCOS?" or is Liposuction a treatment for PCOS? PCOS is PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome or #PCOD. Nowadays we see more and more younger women coming with this problem. There are various reasons for it ...lifestyle, lack of exercise, junk food. Also, the insecticides and pesticides used on vegetables, some of them are estrogen or hormone-mimicking agents which can cause hormonal disturbances. Then we have nonvegetarians who are eating meat and chicken, which have been treated with hormones to hasten their development and these hormones then trickle into humans. The treatment basically involves trying to get rid of junk and processed food and lose weight. But, PCOS and weight gain (insulin resistance) are interrelated. PCOS causes weight gain and the weight gain worsens the PCOS. Hence it's a Vicious cycle. Everybody agrees on one thing that to control your PCOS you need to lose weight, you need to avoid processed food avoid SUGARS, avoid junk food & eat a lot of healthy fresh produce. But, most of the patients of weight gain due to PCOS are in a vicious cycle, how do you break the cycle? Breaking the cycle is done by reducing weight which is the most frustrating thing to do. They do their diets and exercises but when they do not see visible weight loss or improvement, they tend to lose heart and give up. Many of the patients do well with diet and exercise and we have loads of examples of it, but not everyone can sustain the effort needed to do it on a daily basis. So where does Liposuction fit into this whole scenario? It is NOT a treatment for PCOS, but what it does it we help you lose that initial weight and thereby help you break the cycle. With that, the initial loss is done and then maintenance is easier. That's what we have seen with most of our patients and also the feedback we got from them. With the initial loss of the fat in the central region of hips, thighs and tummy ( central obesity), once that fat "load" is reduced, we have most often than not seen that for the patients, their periods start regularising, their hormones start regularising, they are able to conceive. We have had many patients of ours who have been able to conceive after this. It is not a cure for PCOD or PCOS, but it helps you lose that initial weight and kickstart your journey towards a healthier lifestyle. Do I need to Exercise after a Liposuction? This is another query we get that Yes I got a Liposuction done, now what? Do I exercise? Do I keep fit or do I just go do what I want? The answer to that is Yes you need to look after yourself. Liposuction is just a means to an end, we are helping u lose that weight and we are contouring your body and helping u kickstart that healthy lifestyle change. What is does it yes you are removing fat cells from certain areas of your body and contouring your body, for example in your tummy area if you have 100 cells we are physically removing about 70 of them and in severe cases maybe 80 of them but you are still left with 20 cells there. When your body is gaining weight and you are collecting fat, the fat is distributed equally amongst all cells, so in this area you have only 20 cells instead of 100, so the rate of return of fat into those areas is going to be slower as compared to other areas. So, you still have fat cells and the second point being, the fat cell is unique that it can shrink to hold 1gm or it can expand and hold 1Kg. That's what happen when you diet and exercise the cells shrink the fat comes out and is metabolised and when you stop exercising then the fat starts collecting again. So, you still have to do your maintenance. Liposuction is not magic, its still a procedure, you need to understand the procedure and understand what you have to do to maintain those results. If you maintain your weight that you achieve after the procedure, then the results of liposuction are also maintained. But in some instances, we still have about 10-15% cases who come back to us after a few years for a second sitting because they have not looked after themselves, they have not maintained and have collected fat elsewhere. So, yes after a liposuction you still have to maintain and look at what you do and what you eat and still have to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Liposuction is not a cure for all evils, its just a means to an end, we help you kickstart your weight loss or inch loss as we have seen with everyone and all our patients tell us, losing is the difficult part, we help you with that. Maintaining is easier, we hope that you do that so that you have a longer lasting result of your lipo rather than a short term gain.
