Understand how certain circuits in the brain that normally guide goal-directed behavior are malfunctioning in the throes of addiction. Richard Tillinghast, an American poet who lives in Ireland, is the author of ten books of poetry and three non-fiction books. The most recent are The New Life, 2008, Sewanee Poems and Selected Poems, both 2009. He has received grants from the Irish Arts Council, the Guggenheim Foundation, the NEA and the NEH, and has held the Amy Lowell Travelling Fellowship. He is currently working on a book about Istanbul.
