So iMacs. There’s not much to say on performance as we already know all of that and I think my fellow Youtubers in the US and other places who didn’t get the product announcement at night probably have the features covered, but as usual, I’m more interested in what the things we saw yesterday mean for tomorrow.

Breaking down the design of the iMac
It follows the iconic iMac design configuration with the chin… but the chin has a reason now. ALL the computer is in there. And the speakers, and behind those bold white bezels it’s all display. This thing references design elements from all the PowerPC iMacs in my opinion which I love.

One thing that the Intel generation of Macs really lacked for me was personality. And it wasn’t just in terms of the way the products looked, but also that because Apple was just using the same chips as everyone else, they weren’t in control of much. Thermals, performance, release dates. And somehow, this lack of innovation in the internals seems to have leaked out into the exteriors.

But the references to the older ones, lets go.

So, those white bezels and the general colours, clear design nod to the original iMac G3, the first ones with the colours and the original designs that made Apple more iconic in their designs. And actually the new mouse and keyboard are actually very close in style to the style of that G3, just happily not with a circular mouse.

Then the idea of having the display be the display, and the computer itself in the chin, reminds me of Jony Ive’s quote about the G4, letting each part of the iMac be true to itself. That’s why when Apple moved to LCD displays, they kept the computer in the domed foot of the iMac, so that you could appreciate the thin and lightness of the display which at the time was pretty special in a desktop.

The overall design of course is a natural evolution of the iMac G5, the first with that aluminium foot, as well as a seamless front glass (or was it actually polycarbonate back then) across the front including the chin, which in the case of the new iMac too covers the whole face of the system.

So all in all I’m super happy with this design, the white bezels are a real departure, but I feel like in lighter office and home environments they may actually disappear more in real world use than the current black ones. We’ll see. I definitely think the skepticism that people have over the design will disappear when they see it in person. @MKBHD I’m looking at you.

Some of the other stuff that we saw that I think will influence the designs going forward: (and this stuff is just off the top of my head)
