macOS Monterey Beta 6 is available for the public and I’ll be installing it today - There are no particular new feature additions, though the last version of the developer beta did include the ability to enable Universal Control, the new feature that allows users to simply move their Mac’s cursor over to a nearby iPad’s display to seamlessly control it and move files by simply dragging them between devices, and apparently with no specific setup needed. Enabling this did require some terminal commands so it wasn’t specifically being enabled by Apple, and it may be that this feature is delayed, OR it may be that Apple is happy with how its working already and knows that it will be a huge feature that surprises a lot of users and wants to save all the coverage for when the public release drops rather than it being drip fed out during the beta period. South Korea has sent shockwaves through the App Store world by being the first country to bravely tell Apple and Google that they can’t force developers to use their App Stores to distribute software for their platforms. I’m personally still not sure if this is a good or bad thing, and its also not clear if the country wants other app stores, other payment methods in the existing app stores or something else. One group who isn’t sitting on the fence is the Coalition for App Fairness. "South Korea's new app store law is a significant development in the global fight to bring fairness to the digital economy," said Meghan DiMuzio, Executive Director of the Coalition. "We applaud South Korean lawmakers and President Moon Jae-in for setting an example for the rest of the world to hold app store gatekeepers accountable for their harmful and anti-competitive practices. The Coalition for App Fairness hopes U.S. and European lawmakers follow South Korea's lead and continue their important work to level the playing field for all app developers and users." "User trust in App Store purchases will decrease as a result of this proposal," Apple said in a statement, "leading to fewer opportunities for the over 482,000 registered developers in Korea who have earned more than KRW8.55 trillion to date with Apple." Apple has also this week acquired Classical music streaming service Primephonic, which will now close down in a week or so and reappear in an Apple guise in a few months. Current Primephonic subscribers will get 6 months of free Apple Music to tide them over before the new app arrives which will presumably add things like Spacial audio and Apple Lossless. More on the new MacBook Air, both the announced 13.6” and the secret 15.something inch versions, but at WWDC there’s some stuff that was hinted but not revealed - always on Lock Screen for the next iPhone (pro) and the like. That would work perfectly with those widgets and there are code snippets that have allowed some developers to get this working on iPhone X models. And even some bugs where it randomly happened on iPhone X models without people trying, if inconsistently. No Apple TVOS updates at WWDC but we hear rumours of smaller or at least lower cost AppleTV coming soon. - Could a new version finally bring a camera to the living room for FaceTime calls? Will it even include a top clip so you can use continuity camera on your iPhone to make calls from your TV? HomePods - No mention of HomePods at WWDC either but again, rumours that there’s a new bigger HomePod coming too. On HomeKit, apparently you’ll no longer be able to use an iPad as a home hub, ie a device which stays connected to your wifi and interfaces with your smart home devices. Bit of a bummer as it was a great way to use an old iPad if the battery starts going a bit crap keeping it as a mini kitchen YouTube TV slash audio controller while it also looks after the house, but you can use an AppleTV or HomePod (mini). On the main event though, the MacBook Air 15” what are we expecting? Well Ross Young, display analyst extraordinaire has revealed that apple is not just looking at 14.1” iPads (and not iPad Pros, just iPads) but also that they’re looking at a 15” panel for a future MacBook Air, or MacBook not pro at least. This is slated for Spring of 2023 by most sources and Ming Chi Kuo has mentioned that it could feature the M2 and M2 Pro chips inside. Now Apple with Apple Silicon hasn’t shown willing to discriminate power by dimensions so far, which would suggest that the regular 13.6” MacBook Air could also see an M2 Pro if that’s the case? But this is where it all gets a little sussy. Because we’re already hearing that the MacBook Pro with M2 is running significantly hotter than the M1, and that has a fan inside. So would this 15” MacBook really be an Air, and is the Air moniker defined now by the lack of a fan. Surely the M2 Pro would be hotter than the M2… So could this be the plain old MacBook with a fan? Perhaps. There are a lot of questions still to be answered if this 15” thing with a non-pro display but a notch and a new design are to emerged, but If its fanless, I’d guess it will be limited to base M2. If not, maybe it won’t be an Air after all. Also we did hear about a 12” MacBook being looked into, but there’s no sign of that in the supply chain yet so if Mark Gurman is right, that info has to have come from someone most likely in Apple’s design studio, but don’t hold your breath, it won’t be here any time soon.
