Title: Dismantling the Empire_ America's Last Best Hope
Author: Chalmers Johnson
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Politics
Description:ReviewStimulating and prescient. . .—_Times Literary Supplement_Succinct, hard-hitting attacks on what the author perceives as America's ruinous imperial follies...—_Publishers Weekly_, starred reviewConcise, clear, hard-hitting. . . Dismantling the Empire is a must read for anyone looking for meaningful information concerning the future of the American Empire.—_Foreign Policy Journal_Praise for Chalmers Johnson“Johnson wants the scales to fall from American eyes so that the nation can see the truth about its role in the world. His is a patriot’s passion: his motive is to save the American republic he loves.”br —Jonathan Freedland, The New York Review of Books “The role of the prophet is an honorable one. In Chalmers Johnson the American empire has found its Jeremiah. He deserves to be heard.”br —Andrew J. Bacevich, The Washington Post Book World“Chalmers Johnson’s important new book is something with which everyone who aspires to a worthwhile opinion about this country’s future must contend.”br —_The Los Angeles Times_ (on Nemesis)“Trenchantly argued, comprehensively documented, grimly eloquent. . . Worthy of the republic it seeks to defend.”br —_The Boston Globe_ (on The Sorrows of Empire) “Stunning and shocking. . . Blowback is a wake-up call for America.”br —John Dower, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Embracing Defeat strongstrongFrom the author of the bestselling Blowback Trilogy, an urgent call to confront America's waning powerIn his prophetic book Blowback, published before 911, Chalmers Johnson warned that our secret operations in Iraq and elsewhere around the globe would exact a price at home. Now, in a brilliant series of essays written over the last three years, Johnson measures that price and the resulting dangers America faces. Our reliance on Pentagon economics, a global empire of bases, and war without end is, he declares, nothing short of a suicide option.Dismantling the Empire explores the subjects for which Johnson is now famous, from the origins of blowback to Barack Obama's Afghanistan conundrum, including our inept spies, bad behavior in other countries, ill-fought wars, and capitulation to a military that has taken ever more control of the federal budget. There is, he proposes, only one way out: President Obama must begin to dismantle America's empire of bases before the Pentagon dismantles the American dream. If we do not learn from the fates of past empires, he suggests, our decline and fall are foreordained. This is Johnson at his best: delivering both a warning and a crucial prescription for a remedy.

But when he finds a blank book in the snow, his typical indifference melts away. From the first moment he touches the book, he senses its strange power. Passages start to appear on the pages—revealing family secrets, telling the history of Malonia, and uncovering the story of Ryan and Anna, two teens from a parallel universe. Title: Look to Windward
Author: Iain M. Banks
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Science-Fiction
Description:
The Twin Novae battle had been one of the last of the Idiran war, and one of the most horrific: desperate to avert their inevitable defeat, the Idirans had induced not one but two suns to explode, snuffing out worlds and biospheres teeming with sentient life. They were attacks of incredible proportion -- gigadeathcrimes. But the war ended, and life went on.
Now, eight hundred years later, light from the first explosion is about to reach the Masaq' Orbital, home to the Culture's most adventurous and decadent souls. There it will fall upon Masaq's 50 billion inhabitants, gathered to commemorate the deaths of the innocent and to reflect, if only for a moment, on what some call the Culture's own complicity in the terrible event.
Also journeying to Masaq' is Major Quilan, an emissary from the war-ravaged world of Chel. In the aftermath of the conflict that split his world apart, most believe he has come to Masaq' to bring home Chel's most brilliant star and self-exiled dissident, the honored Composer Ziller.
Ziller claims he will do anything to avoid a meeting with Major Quilan, who he suspects has come to murder him. But the Major's true assignment will have far greater consequences than the death of a mere political dissident, as part of a conspiracy more ambitious than even he can know -- a mission his superiors have buried so deeply in his mind that even he cannot remember it.
Hailed by SFX magazine as an excellent hopping-on point if you've never read a Banks SF novel before, *Look to Windward* is an awe-inspiring immersion into the wildly original, vividly realized civilization that Banks calls the Culture.
Title: Case of Lies
Author: Perri O'Shaughnessy
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Fiction:Detective
Description:From Publishers WeeklyA math genius, a tough courtroom adversary and an even tougher judge make the 11th legal thriller in the Nina Reilly series (_Unlucky in Law_, etc.) the most intriguing yet. Back in Lake Tahoe, Nina gets her next case from a masseuse whose aunt was killed during a motel robbery. Unless Nina acts, the lawsuit filed against the Ace High Lodge will be dismissed, as no one has been able to locate the witnesses. Reluctant to call on ex-lover PI Paul van Wagoner for help, Nina hires her assistants PI son, Wish, who discovers that the witnesses are MIT students with a sideline counting cards. While the old case takes on new life, people connected to it are threatened and worse. OShaughnessy (lawyer Pamela and editor Mary OShaughnessy) takes the reader inside the beautiful mind of emotionally immature, occasionally delusional, quantitatively inspired Elliott Wakefield as he solves equations, cares for his father and plays blackjack. In thrillers as in math proofs, neatness counts. Here, the Internet and national security bring Elliotts story to an almost too-neat conclusion, while Nina ingeniously solves the problem of replacing Paul in her personal life. As always, OShaughnessy keeps legal procedure straight, language crisp and plot consistently absorbing. br Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. FromDavid Hanna witnessed the murder of his wife (and her unborn fetus) outside a hotel on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Now its two years later, and Hanna enlists the help of Nina Reilly, a formidable attorney of some local notoriety (and star of 10 previous OShaughnessy adventures). The plan is to hold the hotel accountable for its lack of security, which made possible the robbery that produced the stray bullet that, in turn, killed Hannas wife. The perp was never caught, and the three robbery victims, who Nina feels are the key to the case, have been no help, purposely staying in California so that the Nevada court has no jurisdiction over them. Ninas search for the truth takes her all the way to Europe--and into the arms of her former husband. OShaunessy (pseudonym for a sister team) has a knack for plotting and for combining suspenseful action with a light and playful tone. Another fine addition to an appealing and popular series. Title: The Fall of Hyperion
Author: Dan Simmons
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Science-Fiction
Description:Amazon.com ReviewThe stunning continuation of the epic adventure begun in From Publishers WeeklyThis densely plotted book concludes the futuristic tale begun in Hyperion . Earth has long since been destroyed, and humans now occupy more than 150 worlds linked by the Web, an instantaneous travel system created and operated by artificial intelligences (AIs--self-aware, highly advanced computers). These worlds are about to war with the Ousters, a branch of humanity that has disdained dependency on the AIs. At risk are the planet Hyperion, its mysterious Tombs that travel backward in time, and the Shrike, its godavatar of pain or retribution. The narrative focuses on the government of the Web and its leader, Meina Gladstone, as observed by Joseph Severn, a cybernetic re-creation of the poet John Keats, and seven Shrike pilgrims, who may affect the war's outcome. Simmons pits good against evil, with the religions of man and those of the machines battling for supremacy. Despite his grand scale, however, he fashions intensely human individuals whom the reader will take to heart. 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.
