The English Department's "Conversations with Distinguished Alumni" series will feature Charlie Hallowell, celebrated chef and restaurateur, on Wednesday, April 25th, at 5 p.m., in room 315 Wheeler Hall. Since graduating from Berkeley with a B.A. in English in 2002, Hallowell has become a leader in the Bay Area's slow food and local food movements. He has opened two of Oakland's most popular restaurants—Pizzaiolo and Boot & Shoe Service—and is currently planning to open a third. Come to hear him talk about his Berkeley education and the business and pleasure of food in Northern California with Chair Samuel Otter and Professor Stephen Best.
Event sponsored jointly by Development and Chernin Program
In this interview Dr. Yoshimichi Sato (Tohoku University, Japan) emphasizes the power of quantitative sociology for making sense of social "puzzles", while also stressing the need to supplement quantitative analysis with qualitative approaches and knowledge of the local and national contexts being studied. He also discusses his own path to sociology and he was drawn to it as a way of addressing inequalities and understanding various forms of stratification.
This is part of a series of interviews with the 22 members of the Executive Committee of the International Sociological Association (ISA). The interviews can be found at the ISA website:
