Mission:
Over two decades ago, my passion for filmmaking ignited with the discovery of the Panasonic AG-DVX100 video camcorder. Determined to craft stories, I embarked on a filmmaking journey employing no-budget principles and the essence of 24-hour film festivals—using local resources, simplicity, and gratitude.
Despite limited knowledge, I took on various roles—writing, filming, editing, and delivering projects—with unwavering support from friends and collaborators.
47th & Nowhere was the first film and it was based off of a mash-up of true events during the height of the meth labs in the high deserts of California. It was written “on the fly” starting with just basic ideas. Like a 24 hour film festival. It took about 48 hours, actually! The villainous protagonist was, Kevin Chatham, my drum tech. Guess what, he still is my drum tech! I thought he did a pretty good job acting, so I used him in “Captain Howdy”…
Ray Halm shot the lions share of “Captain Howdy” and I had lot’s of help from other people as well. Today, doing all these things have been streamlined. You still have to be good to do it right, but the tools are so much better now and much cheaper!
Finally, “The Last Supper” It was made for a Zombie Film Fest. It had to be under 5 minutes in length. I had limited resources for effects and make-up, so I concentrated on storyline. I used my old Airstream as the main stage. A couple who had “Gotten The Bite” were facing death and then re-birth as zombies. They have their last supper in a their travel trailer before the towns people seek them out to end their life before their zombie life would begin.
I used my friend and Jiu Jitsu buddy, Kimko who was a true pro. Roxanne was never an actress, yet I used her in all three films because she was such a natural. She also put up with me asking all kinds of crazy things of her, like lack of sleep! My ex girlfriend was Helen, who helped with virtually everything back then and did a great job being an actress while never being an actress!
There were like 200 entries into the Zombie Fest and I think I got like, #8 or something. Not horrible.
I decided later that I liked documentary films almost as much as any other kind of film. I have always been obsessed with people who are obsessed with things, so I started with my personal obsession… motorcycles! The booming Cafe Racer comeback I began to capture along with Ray Halm once again. We built all kinds of gear to capture motorcycles on the road. Mounts, cranes and all of it hand built from stuff the local hardware store.
This film actually took me back to my hometown of Harrisburg, PA where I shot video of the “Jesus of motorcycles”.
Sadly, I never finished the film, but I have all the footage and one of these days I will finish it! It’s called “Hooligan” Motorcycling’s Ousiders.
These days I’m pretty much just the same drummer as I have always been, but now I’m also a YouTube bum, documenting me as @ThePoisonDrummer or uncovering Urban Legends on my @RikkiRockettsLegendTripping channel.
I hope you enjoy these films. There are somewhat embarrassing at times. Someone once said when making indie films, “Great is the enemy of good. You don't have time to be a perfectionist. Make it while you preserve the interest and the energy of the non paid actors!”
My dedication remains unchanged—I am a drummer and a storyteller, inspired by the unexplored realms of creativity. One day I will make another film and it will be good, maybe even a little great. Universal, I am the Creature from the Black Lagoons biggest fan. Hint, hint!
