This is a polish of my 1st psychology video reuploaded: Adult children of dysfunctional parents are often a shocked when words come out of their mouths that sound exactly like their parents. A cycle of abuse that continues from generation to generation. Habits can operate unconsciously repeating what we didn’t like about our parents. How does it happen and how can it be stopped?

Like in his book on dreams, Freud begins "The Joke and Its Relation to the Unconscious" with a survey of expert opinions on the workings of humour. They include novelist Jean Paul, psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin, and philosophers, Theodor Vischer, Kuno Fischer, and Theodor Lipps. Their opinions include ways to view humour as "playful judgment", "a free play of ideas", "sense in nonsense", "bafflement and light dawning." Lipp emphsizes brevity, "wit says what it does say, not always in few, but always in too few words." This allows the listener the pleasure to figure things out. With more depth some of the opinions move closer to where Freud is heading. To have wit is to have "the ability to...find hidden similarities", and "linking two ideas which in some way are contrasted with each other."

It is fortunate when people learn about mimetic rivalry and are able to adjust their lives accordingly, but there are many who will not learn this and bound into every conflict, and these conflicts can start early in childhood and pathology can develop before they enter the workforce. Everything is just an empty search for approval from others for the objects that are chosen. When people look at work as only a means to an end, motivation saps and it becomes robotic. One of the best psychoanalysts that understood this problem well was Heinz Kohut who was in the lineage of Ego Psychology. Ideally employers provide boundaries to work within, but many people have grown up in families where everything is motivated by parents, and eventually authority figures in the world of work. To not be able to create personal goals to fulfill means no fulfillment. One just looks for cues from authority figures, and like a slave, one's emotions are tied to the criticisms of others. Attention is an unreliable source of energy.

Right Action connects with Right Effort, because when there is a solid understanding of what good actions are for oneself, there's a desire to alter thinking to motivate Right Action. Because effort is a triggering word that exhausted people would least want to hear, that the path requires more effort, Right Effort can be underrated, or overrated.

When we develop the prior steps on the Noble Eightfold Path, there is now a method to look clearer into this human experience. Mindfulness illuminates how reactivity works in the mind and the body, and it reminds us what we are supposed to be doing with the Eightfold Path: To find the Supreme Happiness of Peace.

Blog: http://psychreviews.org/the-pleasure-principle-sigmund-freud/
Freud's pillar's of Psychoanalysis, the Pleasure Principle, and the Reality Principle were a practical test to assess a patient's grip on reality. Between scales of neurosis or psychosis, people could avoid reality at differing levels of disassociation, which was a depressing realization for the one caught in the trap. Yet there was hope precisely because the same principles could be used as a standard of psychological health, and become a goal for researchers and therapists to help patients achieve it.

Blog: http://psychreviews.org/treatment-of-narcissistic-personality-disorder/
Welcome to the last episode of this narcissistic personality disorder series. In the beginning we looked at Freud’s contributions from On Narcissism, where we see a self-love aimed at an ego-ideal which makes all important people in the narcissist’s life a means to an end. Achieving the ego ideal. As the child grows up the true self is never developed and a mask used for the public is identified with, which is the False Self. As the False self is challenged in a competitive ruthless environment, the narcissist learns from trial and error how to use politics and leverage to get his or her way. So far we have looked at how inhuman the narcissist is. The robotic quality and lack of empathy, but the narcissist is a person. When someone is far away from the narcissist they can feel sorry for their bad childhood, but when you are a victim it is impossible.

In this series on Narcissism I am going to summarize what we learned in the prior episode and expand our understanding of the ego-ideal, how it can pathologically morph into a false self, and I’ll describe what a true self is. Everyone has a healthy version of an ego-ideal to orient our goals but when it is pathological it becomes The False self.
