I have arrived in Iceland and here is the video of my journey from San Francisco to Iceland. I am still pretty jet-lagged and time-zone disoriented but I finally made it to the house I will be staying at for the rest of the trip. The Sound of Death (live performance, conducted by Willie Winant) – This is the climactic moment when Huang, the father, is murdered by the soldier who no longer will tolerate his lifestyle under the orders of Mao. The Sound of Death is the fourth scene (second live performance piece) in a larger work—The Story of Wu Wei—a condensed, single-act English-language chamber opera (written in 2017-2018) based on my mother’s struggle to survive during the Mao Regime in China in the 1950s. During this period of civil strife, millions died to violent class warfare. The opera features both fixed-media electronic interludes and live performance.
