The search for planets around other stars is heating up. So far, there are over 4,000 confirmed exoplanets. What would the Earth look like in one of these searches?
Dustin talks about his experiences with the new iOptron equatorial mounts. And Tony wonders about the effects of LED streetlights on our night skies.

Evidence for dark matter has been known for some time, and it is expected that it interacts with the familiar luminous matter that we see in the universe in some normal way. Yet, although dark matter seems to account for the fact that galaxies are able to hold together with gravity, it does not behave as normal matter in other respects. It seems to be evident in gravitational lenses, yet we cannot observe it directly. Otherwise dark matter seems to only weakly interact with ordinary matter. A recent scientific study of radio data was interpreted to be evidence for the formation of stars, and further, a signal of interaction between normal and dark matter. The physics of the situation appears tricky though, and a team of scientists has proposed that maybe dark matter actually has a tiny bit of electric charge. This would be remarkable and has some interesting consequences.
Join Tony Darnell and Carol Christian during Afternoon Astronomy Coffee on June 14 at 3PM Eastern time as they discuss with the investigators, Avi Loeb, Cora Dvorkin, and Julian Munoz (Harvard University) this amazing idea and the implications their model has for understanding dark matter and the make up of the universe.

New observations of two supernovae: The Crab Nebula and Cassieopia A show wildly differing amounts of a vital component for life to thrive: Phosphorus. A team of astronomers from the University of Cardiff in Wales have measured these two supernovae in an attempt to find out how Phosphorus was distributed throughout the galaxy. What they found was surprising and rather bad news for those of us hoping to find a galaxy teeming with life.

A Dutch schoolteacher discovered an enigmatic object while classifying galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in 2007. Astronomers took a closer look with the Hubble and found a remarkable set of circumstances.

In this episode, we’re going to take on the topic of quantum entanglement. That feature of quantum mechanics that Einstein called a spooky action at a distance. Well last month astronomers used very distant quasars to remove a possible bias in an experiment designed to test the idea of quantum entanglement.

Thanks to Scott Lewis for another really good episode. This particular SFN is a good example of why I'm happy to have a collaboration with him. He is in a position to say and report on things that constrain me. I really wanted to get this information out, but didn't feel comfortable doing it myself.

While the world’s space agencies extend humanity’s reach into space with science satellites of all kinds, generations of scientists have carried out cutting-edge research from high in the Earth’s atmosphere using balloons with remarkable capabilities and innovative designs to take advantage of the special advantages of high-altitude ballooning. It’s program of discoveries is just beginning!
Join Tony Darnell, Alberto Conti, and Harley Thronson as they discuss with Stephen Rinehart (NASA Goddard) and Christopher Walker (University of Arizona) the challenges and excitement of research ballooning.
This series of Hangouts are in affiliation with the American Astronomical Society and the American Astronautical Society.
