Me, going into a (sometimes dark) rant about the loss of the Blues in both American and world music. Clearly, I'm not happy about this turn of events. But it is what it is...

A song with a very simple structure but still slams it out of the park as a catchy, memorable song. Many thanks to James Corbett and Broc West (video editing.)
A side note: This morning I was listening more closely to the Ab chord that shows up in the Coda of the song. There was something about the quality of that Ab the kept bothering me. On close listening, yes, it was an Ab chord but with a raised 5th making it yet another augmented chord to show up in this song--precisely Ab augmented. This morning's discovery put a smile on my face.

Here, I am offering a basic overview of what's to come regarding Blues Theory. I will be discussing the Three Systems; why the Blues is so important; and finally, 'Blues Clues' or, the footprints left in the sand by the Blues. Bear in mind, there is no theory or system from the perspective of academic music studies that explains, theoretically, why the Blues works. In the final analysis, it's still a mystery. But, because of music theory, we can at least discuss its properties and traits and why the Blues is such a radical, world-changing form of music.
[By the way,--and how embarrassing!--I referred Arnold Schoenberg as Arnold "Schoenfeld!" I must have been thinking of one of my students with that last name. Pardon that one!]

As a composer, I have a bad habit of writing pieces that stand at the precipice of my technical skill. This one has always been very difficult for me to play. That's why I call it 'A Wing & A Prayer,' because that's exactly how it feels when I attempt playing this one. This was absolutely pre-composed when I was living in Austin, TX in the mid Nineties. I'm proud of this piece as a real work of art.
