This exercise works best (for people with chronic back pain) when you have prepared yourself by freeing your back muscles using one of the programs shown, below. However, it is effective for those recovering from paralysis.

The movements of the spinal muscles make coordinated balance possible. The integrity of the spinal muscles takes a loose collection of vertebrae and unifies it into a structure we call a spine, capable of supporting us. The sensuous movements shown integrate the spinal muscles into coordinated patterns of movement, starting from simple and getting more complex.
People who are stiff typically have certain parts of their spine too flexible and others too stiff, from muscles being tight at different locations. These movements reveal to you where you are flexible and where you are stiff. If you have have difficulty maintaining balance through these movements, it's a sure sign that your spinal muscle coordination is off -- something that can't be corrected by spinal adjustments or massage, since movement is something we learn, not something done to us.

The "Intelligent Empowerment" series of lessons and abilities taps us into the source of creative power, a set of four drives:
* attention
* Intention
* imagination
* memory
the combination of which I call, The TetraSeed ("tetra" means "four").
Any experience and any creative effort requires the functioning of all four drives or facets.
This video clip shows a teaching occasion of two procedures, The Set-Up and The Lightening Bolt.
The Gold Key Release is the first of the procedures, suitable for learning the basics of using The TetraSeed.

Understanding the Sacro-Iliac Joints, Stopping the Pain and Weird Symptoms
http://lawrencegoldsomatics.blogspot.com/2011/04/understanding-sacro-iliac-joints.html
This exercise modification changes the working position of Lesson 3 of The Cat Stretch Exercises | http://somatics.com/page7-cat_audio.htm | to reach the quadratus lumborum (QL) muscles. The arm, instead of cradling the head, pulls toward the QL and then, during the relaxation phase, reaches away past the head.
All other parts of the exercise remain the same.
The QL lifts one side of the pelvis with each step of walking, in combination with the gluteus minimus and tensor fascia lata muscles (connected to the ilio-tibial/IT band) of the opposite side.
When the QL, low back muscles, psoas muscles, and hamstrings are all tight, S-I Joint Pain Syndrome results. more on S-I/sacroiliac joint pain: | http://lawrencegoldsomatics.blogspot.com/2011/04/understanding-sacro-iliac-joints.html
Injuries lead to the condition by triggering muscle tension. The term is, "Trauma Reflex"; in Trauma Reflex, we involuntarily/automatically pull the injured part in to protect it. A broken leg, knee injury, or sprained ankle can trigger it and it may persist indefinitely, unless corrected, due to altered muscle/movement memory (sensory-motor amnesia).
Somatic education exercises reverse the condition by correcting muscle/movement memory -- best done after any injury has healed, so the pain of the original injury doesn't re-trigger Trauma Reflex.
The QL muscles are closely related to the iliopsoas (liacus) muscles, as both muscles attach at the top border of the pelvis, in back (iliac crest). For more on the psoas muscles, see
