Comrades, friends and supporters, this weekend we have a three-part release of “On the Barricades” with host Boyan Stanislavski and our repeat-guest and friend of the show, Youri Smouter of 1+1. Boyan and Youri are doing a wrap-up and reflection on what they view as important trends and processes for the Left in relation to world events of 2022. To paraphrase the philosopher Spinoza, our task is neither to weep, nor to laugh, nor to hate, but understand the processes and actions of historical and political significance that are unfolding around us. We at The Barricade have strived to bring balanced analysis and commentary from a leftist, Eastern-European perspective without getting swept away by liberal hysteria, war-mongering, idealist identity politics, cancel culture, or outright a-historical craze that sweeps the public discourse. We are enthused to continue this project into the new year, staying the course and opening a space for genuine political discussion on the left at a time when it seems media consumers are being prepared, by the powers that be, for ongoing war and confusion, buried under narratives and propaganda more than ever.

Maria Cernat and Boyan Stanislavski discuss on this edition of On the Barricades a report claming that Poland is the worst place for the LGBT community despite the fact that recent research shows that the LGBT community's acceptance in the Polish society is improving. Maria Cernat then goes on to analyze the successes of Hungarian president Viktor Orban, whose prospects of winning elections grew significantly, according to a poll taken in March. The poll indicates that he would win three quarters of the parliamentary seats. Meanwhile in Hungary the police repressed a couple of thousands of protesters gathered in front of the Viktor Orban's office. Maria Cernat tries to analyze the sources of Orban's success despite strikes and protests. She also makes the point that essentializing to the LGBT stance the performance and success of a politician does not offer a comprehensive explanation. Moreover, linking the LGBT cause to that of security institutions and corporations of the collective West may prove a very dangerous strategy in the long run.

In this episode, Boyan Stanislavski and Dr. Maria Cernat discuss recent developments in Poland, where the political climate has deteriorated yet again in recent weeks. A new wave of hysterical, possibly psychotic, reactions could have been seen when two helicopters allegedly belonging to an army of a neighboring country to Poland crossed the border. This is in addition to the widespread phobia against a certain powerful country gaining even more ground. Finally, the hosts provide a brief description and commentary on a profoundly pathological situation involving a little-known Instagrammer known as Johnny D'Arc. According to the Polish opposition, this person was pregnant and was assaulted by Polish police while attempting to have an abortion. This is simply false and reflects the true state of mind of the Polish opposition.

Ukraine has captured the attention of the international media, because there are serious concerns about a potential military confrontation in the region. First, there were conversations regarding the potential military invasion of the country by Russia and the alleged build-up at the Russian and Ukrainian border. Then there were several meetings of US and Russian officials to discuss the situation. The boldest move was on the part of the Russians, who advanced a list of security guarantees that the US must accept. These demands include the retreat of NATO from Eastern European countries, such as Romania and Bulgaria, and not having a veto right regarding a potential NATO expansion in Ukraine and Georgia.
Given the very tense situation, we decided to invite Volodymyr Artiukh, an anthropologist interested in labor, migration, and the political economy of the post-Soviet states. He has studied labor relations in Belarus, and he is currently conducting research in Ukraine about internal migration and deindustrialization.
We invite you to see the international conflicts that potentially involve Ukraine through the eyes of a Ukrainian-born anthropologist, who is willing to explain the situation in his country and what the potential peaceful solutions are.

He earned a PhD after graduating from Moscow State University, and he is frequently described as a scholar deconstructing nationalism and populism in international researcher databases. He's written a number of books and reports on current Russian, Ukrainian, and European politics.
Stanislav Byshok will explain the attitudes of the Russian public and the reactions of the Russian media to the growing tensions between Moscow and Washington over Ukraine in a two-part conversation hosted by Maria Cernat and Boyan Stanislavski. Last week, a stunning series of events occurred in Kazakhstan, a major Central Asian country. In comparison to many other states with a similar history of ties to the USSR, this post-Soviet republic was largely a success story. Another significant difference is that Kazakhstan, with the support of Russia and the CSTO, prevented a color revolution from taking place just last week. But was there a concerted effort on the part of Western powers to stage a putsch against Kazakhstan's government? Or was the uprising we witnessed merely a manifestation of power struggles within the Kazakh establishment?
Before we get to those questions, The Barricade's Boyan Stanislavski and Maria Cernat discuss the general political realities in Kazakhstan today, as well as the fundamental premises for such violent events to have occurred.

Polish women will be forced to give birth to foetuses with congenital defects. Maria Cernat discusses the situation in Poland with Karolina Więckiewicz, a feminist and activist who is a member of the Aborcyiny Dream Team (Abortion Dream Team). Poland's current ruling is one of the most horrific episodes in a long battle against women that the anti-choice movement has been fighting for many years. Since 1993, abortions have been almost completely banned in Poland, but fortunately, there are organizations which are fighting for free and safe abortions for many women and girls in this country. Karolina is part of such an organization. The anti-choice groups have targeted Karolina, and she has even found her face painted on a van next to a picture of a foetus with slogans accusing her of being a murderer. These are tactics and techniques that are used by US-based militant anti-choice groups that are very well financed. They are waging war against women and girls. Despite such powerful opposition, Karolina is optimistic about the support networks that give women and girls access to reproductive rights, and she is convinced that positive women will prevail in this battle against irrationality, misogyny, and authoritarianism.
