According to the Boston Globe, the New Balance shoe company – famed makers of high-end running and tennis shoes – was pressured by the Obama Administration to not criticize President Barack Obama’s pet trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) as it was being considered by Congress. The bill is now dead until a new Congress convenes next year, and depending on the outcome of November’s elections, the prospects may turn even worse for TPP. New Balance officials have now revealed that they were offered a sweet deal with the Pentagon if they would not criticize the giant trade deal. “… they were told the Department of Defense would give them serious consideration for a contract to outfit recruits with [their] athletic shoes.” The TPP would have gradually phased out tariffs on shoes made in Vietnam. But this would have made imports from that nation ridiculously cheap and jeopardized American jobs at the New Balance plants in New England. However, no order was ever placed, and now New Balance believes the entire deal was a false promise by the Obama Administration to lure them into supporting TPP before Americans woke up and came to their senses. New Balance is one of a handful of shoe companies that still makes some its shoes in America. New Balance CEO Rob DeMartini tried to justify their previous silence on Obama’s TPP deal: "We wanted to compete for a big piece of business that we are very confident we can win in." But an official company press release was much stronger. According to Matt LeBretton, the Vice-President of Public Affairs for New Balance: “We swallowed the poison pill that is TPP so we could have a chance to bid on these contracts,...We were assured this would be a top-down approach at the Department of Defense if we agreed to either support or remain neutral on TPP. [But] the chances of the Department of Defense buying shoes that are made in the USA are slim to none while Obama is president.” New Balance is now speaking out on the way the administration is trying to entice American business to sell out their country for a short-term profit that brings longer-term disaster to American workers. I just got an email from the Trump organization – like, no doubt, many of you – asking me to rate the 30 top priorities he has for his administration. In my opinion, the survey should have a “medium priority” selection, because I hate to give some of these important priorities a “low priority” rating, but if the goal is to get my opinion on which ones should be on the top of the “to-do” pile, that’s all I can do. I’m going to discuss many of Trump’s priorities in future reports because I’ve got something to say about many of them. Priority #1 – Begin constructing the wall along the southern border. I’m going to say that this is probably the top priority. However as we go through these there will probably be others that I consider the top priority as well. Right now, illegal immigrants are streaming across the southern border in record numbers. Hidden among the mostly harmless Mexican and Central and South Americans, who are primarily looking for a better life in the United States, are terrorists and future terror supporters. Right now, we are in an undeclared World War – a war unlike any nation has ever faced before. In Pentagon-ese, it’s called a low-intensity conflict – or LIC. This is an entirely new world in understanding how we protect this nation’s sovereignty. Although some play down the threat as the ravings of racists, the real brains in the Pentagon know this is an existential threat, the likes of which we have not faced in a thousand years. You need only to ask a native German how his nation has changed, or ask a native Italian what the economic prospects are for the average child growing up in Italy today to convince yourself that the threat to western civilization and its 2500-year-long march towards democracy and freedom for the common person is real and threatens its very existence – existential. Trump will face this head on, where his predecessor did everything he could do to assist the enemy. How he will deal with it is anybody’s guess, but one thing is for sure, it will be creative and it will be effective. Why? Because of his so-called “disparaging” remarks about Mexicans.
