GUILTY! GUILTY! GUILTY! When officer Derek Chauvin was convicted on all three charges in the trial for the death of George Floyd, many rejoiced that “justice was served”. Some “back the blue” folks were angry. Personally, I didn’t know how to feel. If you’ve listened to this show for any length of time, you know that my primary position on everything is simply “what’s true?” I’m vehemently opposed to cults and mob mentalities of all shapes, sizes, colors, and brands. Floyd’s death was an absolute tragedy, but was it a murder? Was it negligence? Was it an overdose? I’m certainly no fan of government sanctioned policing, but I wasn’t entirely convinced that Derek Chauvin intentionally murdered George Floyd. For as long as I’ve known him, the 2020 Libertarian Vice Presidential candidate and my good friend, Spike Cohen has been one of the most gracious, open minded, and influential people I’ve known. Late last year, I went on tour with Spike to document the campaign and his ability to lovingly succinctly explain his positions with zero condescension, unknowingly reshaped my own positions on several issues. So, when I saw Spike Cohen posting that “justice was served” in the Chauvin trial, while my mind was not quite made up on the matter, naturally I invited Spike back on the show to share his reasoning and try to get to the bottom of this case. I have a whole lot of concern about the slippery slope of fear-based mob justice and no matter how uncomfortable the truth is, that’s all I’m ever looking for.
