Star Trek: Picard S2E3 The Borg Queen Takes Command & the Crew explores Los Angeles 2024!
“Assimilation,” the third episode of Picard season two, is more of a middle chapter than it is a real progressive step forward in Picard’s current, scattershot adventure, smashing together both Q’s time-fiddling antics and, well, a literal trip back in time. Immediately picking up from last week’s escape from the fascist Confederacy that has replaced the Federation in this altered timeline, things start bad when poor Elnor gets shot. Then, they get worse when Picard informs Rios that in order for them to find out just how and where the timeline was tweaked by Q, they have to give over La Sirena to the Borg Queen (or what’s left of her) to plot a slingshot around the sun that will tear a hole back to the past, and the location of a mysterious “Watcher” who will provide team Picard with the next steps.

Even when Romijn first reprised the role in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, we still didn’t get much more about her history (although the Short Trek of her and Spock stuck on an elevator did shed some light on her character in a humorous way). Swiss cheese memory provides protective side effects the Quantum Leaps second outing. Just like Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) in the original series, Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) is a victim of Swiss Cheese amnesia, a side effect of his time-leaping jumps through the Quantum Leap Project’s massive accelerator. While Sam’s memory deficits were encouraged to help shield him from knowledge that may impact his missions adversely, like the fact that he had a wife in the present, Ben’s memory-holes are a matter of national security. Until the Quantum Leap Project’s team knows more about why Ben jumped, they don’t want him remembering either…just in case his intentions are nefarious. In fact, a lot of things in this Quantum Leap sequel are starting to work. When Ben unbuckles his seatbelt on the shuttle Atlantis for the first time and drifts weightlessly up to the sky window, he appears to be entranced and stargazing to his fellow astronauts, but he is also using the reflection to gaze into his new face. When his space journey ends and he leaps into his next body, he quickly receives just punishment for running off from his engagement party to meet another woman who assists his leap into the great beyond. So it should be no surprise to hear that the show is also a big hit for Paramount+. Today Paramount+ sent out an announcement revealing that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds had the strongest debut ever for a Star Trek series, setting a new record as the most-watched original series in the franchise over its first 90 days. The series is also off to a strong start internationally, ranking as one the top two most-watched original series on Paramount+ in the U.K. Paramount executives showed their enthusiasm for the show in an official statement released today, starting off with the chief of programming for Paramount+ Tanya Giles: ‘Star Trek’ fans all over the world embraced this incredible new ‘Star Trek’ journey. We are thrilled that the ‘Star Trek’ universe continues to be one of the most-watched franchises on the service. Last week the company announced Paramount+ had grown to 43 million subscribers globally, with the most sign-up for any US subscription service during the second quarter of 2022. In a call with investors last week, Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish cited Trek among the drivers for Paramount+, saying: The power and strength of our franchises, existing and new, was on full display this quarter, thanks to strong performances from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, 1883 of the Yellowstone Universe and our latest South Park special, South Park: the Streaming Wars as well as Halo, which has become a top driver globally for subscriber acquisition and engagement.
