Robert Wimer | Day 2 | "Hallelujah"
This piece, originally done by Leonard Cohen has long been a favorite of mine. Since I don’t have the “basement voice” Leonard has, I took a Jeff Buckley approach to this tune. I will admit that the challenge in this year long project will not be singing the songs, but finding that sweet spot in time to do it. Admittedly, I tried this tune again in the afternoon when I got off work simply because I was in better voice and was really “feeling it”, but alas, the traffic was too much. I think that will be the biggest obstacle,..hitting that spot where the voice is good and the traffic is light.

Lasciatemi morire, a song by Claudio Monteverdi, could be considered, by some, to be the very first emo song as the title translates "Let me die".
Lasciatemi morire was one of the first Italian songs I ever learned in college. Jeff Nolte, my second voice teacher, taught me that when you are learning a song, it's important to understand the text so you can convey the emotion of the piece. He emphasized that technique is one thing, but if you combine good technique with emotional content, you have a golden performance that will be memorable. This song, at the time, was a tough one for me to perform. The translation is,..well a bit somber, and, for me, I couldn't just turn that on at will. This was another lesson from my teacher, that you had to remain in emotional control, otherwise it could hurt your voice. "You have to walk a tightrope", was his wise words. I will miss you Jeff.

Meow, Meow, Meow,..sure, it's a simple commercial, but man, it gets in your head, especially with a cute cat singing the song.
Meow, Meow, Meow, if that is the name, I may be forgetting a "meow" or two, is something we all heard at one time or another during the 80s. We enjoyed seeing the cute kitty and the bouncing ball across the screen as some of us (ok, me) sang along.

This is one of my favorite hymns. Admittedly, this will be song at my funeral. This hymn was born out of tragedy for the composer, who lost his family at sea. When his ship went over the spot where the other ship that was to bring his family over to America stopped, he composed this hymn.

Sex and Candy, this tune from Marcy Playground, was another favorite of mine from the 90s. It's still groovy.
Sex and Candy, I must admit that I almost didn't do this one simply because of the "sex" part. Kinda stupid, but there are limits as to the songs I will sing, but this tune, in my opinion, really didn't cast that big of a controversy back in the day and I don't think it will be that way under the overpass.
The words are so reflective of the attitude during that time, especially with many of the 20-somethings like myself. Just gotta hang out and think about myself, really quite amusing since the message of that particular phrase punches you in the face with brutal honesty of a self-centered nature. Sex and Candy, the song is awesome and reminiscent of a decade long past.
