New Language, new layout, same book?
-----------------------------------------------------
The Septuagint was laid out differently than the Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament).
Our Old Testament was not translated from the Septuagint, but the layout of our Old Testament is similar to the Septuagint.
Our Old Testament is laid out in what is commonly called the four-fold division.
1. 5 Books of the Law Genesis through Deuteronomy
2. 12 Books of History Joshua through Esther
3. 5 Books of Poetry Job through Song of Solomon
4. 17 Books of Prophecy Isaiah through Malachi
Yet the Hebrew Old Testament seemed to have only a three-fold division.
1. 5 Books of The Law Genesis through Deuteronomy
2. 8 Books of The Prophets, The Former Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings and The Latter prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah Ezekiel, and The Twelve
3. 11 Books of The Writings Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations, Esther, Ecclesiastes, Daniel, Ezra-Nehemiah, and Chronicles
The way the Hebrew Bible was laid out was much different. Instead of 39 books in four divisions, there were 24 books in three divisions.
In the days of Jesus, this is what a Hebrew Bible would look like. Does that mean then that our Bible is wrong? Not as long as these are the 24 books that Jesus recognized as the word of God.
That upon you may come
Mat 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
Mat 23:30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
Mat 23:31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
Mat 23:32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
Mat 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
Mat 23:34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
Mat 23:35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
Mat 23:36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
Blood of all the prophets
Luk 11:50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
Luk 11:51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
Luk 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
Joash's Treachery
2Ch 24:20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.
2Ch 24:21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.
2Ch 24:22 Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.
To understand these passages of scripture you have to understand that he's not speaking chronologically. He's not saying that from the first martyr to the last martyr (for Zacharias was not the last martyr chronologically)
