How to Use Gesso like a Pro – Prepping Chipboard for Oil Painting
Here is how I use gesso – to prep chipboard for oil painting by teething it. Teething, or a harsh or soft tooth, is how much texture the paper will have. In the video, I do four layers of gesso, which has loads of texture. And then I show how to turn that into a soft tooth finish. The amount of texture, or layers of gesso, depends on the artist's preference. This is a perfect example of how even cheap brushes can do a great job! Just be gentle when you pick hairs out of the canvas.
For oil painting – sketch on the gesso with pencil and then use a "wash" to cover the graphite lest it spreading into the paint. A "wash" is very watered down oil or acrylic paint.
?There are two quotes from the preface of Man's Search For Meaning that are highly attributed to Nietzsche. However, Man's Search For Meaning was written by Viktor Frankl and its preface was written by Gordon Allport, both psychologists. In the end, two very famous Nietzsche quotes are actually from Gordon Allport, and not Nietzsche at all.
Outside of this story and the two quotes, this video is a very unscripted hour of existentialism cut down to a digestible half hour. Cook with me and ponder on some of the curious questions in life that surround existentialism, including some posed by George Orwell's 1984, as well as my own on the levels of suffering that we all deal with.
“to live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering”
“He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how”

? why be you, when you can be new ... a classic question from the kids' movie Robots (2005)
This video could also be called ... explaining why Tyler Durden does what he does, and why the Space Monkeys in Fight Club follow him so faithfully
But I can't help but look at the words behind Tyler's monologue on advertising and entertainment: "We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.” And so with that, let's actually talk about advertising and the entertainment industry. Let's talk about all of the children's movies we were raised on, which pushed the idea of being special, unique, different, and most of all, capable of great things.
Just as Tyler Durden says, "You are not special. You're not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else. We're all part of the same compost heap. We're all singing, all dancing crap of the world.”
Well, which is it?
The answer is that ... to Capitalism, we are nothing. We are the consumer and there will always be more. And we cannot stand for this. We have to punch up against the system and prove that we are the most necessary piece to the absolute puzzle that is capitalism.
If the purpose of life is to create art – then we all need the freedom to do so. Or else, all of our suffering is pointless.
QUOTE OF THE DAY:
Tyler Durden in Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
[1:09:52] in Fight Club the film (1999)
A variation in Ch. 19, Fight Club: A Novel (1996)
“Man, I see in Fight Club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.
“We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.”

Talking about monopoly, capitalism, where the world is currently sitting (mostly America) is one of my favorite things. Luckily, my boyfriend also loves talking about it. Today I am going to show him a couple of vintage political propaganda ads from the 1950s and 1960s and get his first reaction to them. Political propaganda ads still play to this day, but a few decades ago they used to come in cartoon form – and today they are hilarious. Call it political commentary, call it judging old ads, mostly it's all good fun.

Bringing the philosophy of Solipsism into the mix can help shed some light on behaviors to acknowledge in order to avoid the burnout of being the main character. ? What exactly are "junk journals" and what is their purpose? For thoughts and memories, movie tickets and scraps of old take out menus? Or, are they for collages of artful bits of paper that we buy in packs?
In this video, we're going to talk about Epistemology! The theory of knowledge and how we how what we know. In the world of junk journals and ephemera ... this brings up quite a bit of questions! For instance, who owns the images in ephemera packages? Who creates the art? And much more ;)
For our example today, I wanted to share what I found on the 1700s artist T Sheldrake. Check out my blog for all of my research on him! https://artemalexandra.com/2024/06/01/who-is-t-sheldrake/

37:?"Freedom and Liberation" is from Simone de Beauvoir's The Ethics of Ambiguity, from Section 3, Chapter 2. Finding and reading this chapter was as if I had found the very work I set out to write, the very ideas I set out to devote my philosophical life to in her 18 pages.
Never be compliant is an oppressive system.
