How to Use Gesso like a Pro – Prepping Chipboard for Oil Painting
Here is how I use gesso – to prep chipboard for oil painting by teething it. Teething, or a harsh or soft tooth, is how much texture the paper will have. In the video, I do four layers of gesso, which has loads of texture. And then I show how to turn that into a soft tooth finish. The amount of texture, or layers of gesso, depends on the artist's preference.
This is a perfect example of how even cheap brushes can do a great job! Just be gentle when you pick hairs out of the canvas.

For oil painting – sketch on the gesso with pencil and then use a "wash" to cover the graphite lest it spreading into the paint. A "wash" is very watered down oil or acrylic paint.
