A euthanizing drug keeps getting in pet food.
Almost every year, sometimes several times a year, pet food is recalled because dogs and cats get sick and even die. One of the reasons is that pentobarbital, a barbiturate used to euthanize animals, keeps making its way into pet food. How is this possible? It comes in rendered meal, one of the most common ingredients used for protein, filler and flavor. Rendering is the industrial process by which waste animal parts are melted into a liquefied goo. Pet food companies don't manage the rendering plants directly, so they don't oversee what animals are dumped. And that means, sometimes, euthanized animals make it into the rendering process - even though that's banned by the FDA. Typically, it's horses or cows but there continues to be heated debate over whether euthanized shelter animals are also in pet food.
