Drive Reduction Theory (Intro Psych Tutorial #159)
www.psychexamreview.com In this video I describe Clark Hull's Drive Reduction Theory. This theory proposes that behaviors can be considered rewarding because they reduce drives. Drives can then be regarded as primary drives or secondary drives, depending on whether they directly aid survival.

In this video I describe the changes and challenges associated with adulthood and aging. These include new responsibilities, declines in physical and cognitive abilities, and changes in relationships over time. Despite these changes, however, most older adults see an increase in overall well-being late in life, which is likely due to a shift in the importance of emotional goals and a savoring of the present.

In this video I explain why we want to estimate the parameters of the population. This is an essential part of estimating the probability of different scores, and the probability of different samples. By knowing about the population we can start to estimate the likelihood of getting samples that differ. This will be a key part of trying to understand differences between samples, and whether those differences are due to random chance rather than a manipulation or intervention of some kind.

In this video I briefly describe the immune system and the cells involved in surveillance and protection from invaders, pathogens, and other threats. Next I discuss the relationship between stress and decreased immune function, which is related to elevated levels of glucocorticoids. This can also be seen in treatment of autoimmune disorders that uses glucocorticoids to suppress immune function. Lastly I discuss how chronic stress is associated with accelerated aging and the shortening of telomeres on the ends of chromosomes.

In this video I describe how group opinions and decisions can differ from those of the individuals who make up the group. Group polarization refers to the tendency of groups to become more extreme and more polarized than the original views of members. Groups also tend to be more tolerant of risk, known as risky shift. Polarization can still occur when groups are exposed to inconclusive evidence, strengthening views of supporting ideas and dismissing contradictory evidence. Groups may make poor decisions as a result of groupthink, a term coined by Irving Janis to refer to characteristics of some groups that increase conformity, encourage a sense of invulnerability, and disparage opposition.

In this video I explain how we assess the validity of assessments that have been created for a particular property (such as intelligence). There are several types of validity that can be assessed including construct validity, face validity, content validity, and criterion-related validity (concurrent and predictive). I briefly describe each of these types of validity and how they tell us about the relationship between a property, behaviors associated with that property, and assessment results.

In this video I describe the parts of the eye and the function of each of these parts for vision. I also explain why the red-eye effect occurs in photographs and how an additional light is able to correct for this problem. I also describe how changes in the flexibility of the lens lead to common visual problems in aging, such as holding a book at a particular distance in order to read it.

In this video I discuss the role of practice on learning and the importance of building a broad foundation of factual knowledge and comprehension before engaging in higher-order skills. Time spent in practice has been shown to be a more important predictor of chess skill than intelligence when looking at elite young chess players (Bilalic, McCleod, & Gobet, 2007).
I also describe Benjamin Bloom's Taxonomy of educational objectives as well as a common misconception about this hierarchy which is unfortunately rather common in modern education and teacher training. I believe that a strong emphasis on factual knowledge and conceptual understanding is a superior approach for building higher-order skills, rather than attempts to teach these skills directly.
