How to honor veterans on Veterans Day
My fellow Americans, on this Veterans Day, 2011, as we come together as a nation to honor those who have served in uniform, in battle, and all who have put their lives on the line for this nation, some of us, have a special request for you. Some of us who have served in combat have come home to realize that we were sent to fight in wars that were not in this country's best interest, and were not mere mistakes or problems with government intelligence. When I was in Fallujah with a Civil Affairs team in 2004, it felt like we were a fig leaf. We were there to make the occupation of Iraq, look good. In fact, we had a slogan for our unit: we care so that you don't have to. And it wasn't just so that the grunts didn't have to worry about Iraqi civilians. That was "we care" so that everyone in our chain of command, all the way up to the President and all the way back down to the American people could live in the comfortable fantasy that somehow, imposing martial law on a foreign country with our military for years was good for them. We know, that our foreign policy is determined like most other government policy: Not by reasoned debate by wise representatives, but by special interests. We're asking you to care again. We're asking you to pay attention to the political process that results in the youngest of America's best and brightest dying for your fantasies and the profits of "defense" contractors. We're asking you to not let another American soldier die in vain because the American people were too busy getting fat on the couch at home watching meaningless distractions on the television. If you really want to honor veterans today, share this message so that no more will have to die in vain. To my fellow veterans, welcome home. Your country needs you here more than ever.
