On Holy Thursday, we read St. Paul’s teaching and admonition regarding the holy Eucharist. It is perhaps an even better proof of the authenticity of the holy Eucharist, that is that we indeed partake of the body and blood of Christ, then our Lord’s sermon in John or the institution of the Eucharist recounted in three of the Gospels. This is because it is a secondary document, written well after the resurrection, and based upon the living tradition of the church which Paul experienced and participated in. Look at this reading in detail and especially his admonition that there are those who partake of the mystery unworthily. If we understand anything about ourselves, we know that we cannot be worthy of any of God’s grace; however, it is definitely possible to partake of the mistress in such a way that we become sick and harmed. Let’s look into this.

Mary of Egypt. Two ways to love and be forgiven.
What are we to glean (and imitate) from the life of St. Mary of Egypt? Certainly not the supernatural things she did; they are far above our abilities. We are to clean the same thing that the Lord commended the woman who was a sinner for and whose memory we read about on the day we commemorate St. Mary. We are to learn how to love. We discuss two ways in which love causes the forgiveness of our sins. One is gratitude, and the other is related to it but is a little different and even more powerful – and even sinners may practice this love and be forgiven.

Most people know the story about the exorcism of the Gadarene demoniac but very few people answer the questions. The demons ask a question and Jesus Christ in turn asks them a question. We must answer both of these questions. Our answers to these questions have everything to do with our salvation, and in our difficult times, whether or not we will endure our difficult times. As an example of someone who answered these questions superbly, we tell the life of the new monk-martyr James, who is commemorated on this very day, November 1, according to the church calendar, 2021-11-14 on the civil calendar.
