Here, I am offering a basic overview of what's to come regarding Blues Theory. I will be discussing the Three Systems; why the Blues is so important; and finally, 'Blues Clues' or, the footprints left in the sand by the Blues. Bear in mind, there is no theory or system from the perspective of academic music studies that explains, theoretically, why the Blues works. In the final analysis, it's still a mystery. But, because of music theory, we can at least discuss its properties and traits and why the Blues is such a radical, world-changing form of music.
[By the way,--and how embarrassing!--I referred Arnold Schoenberg as Arnold "Schoenfeld!" I must have been thinking of one of my students with that last name. Pardon that one!]

At last! The first official Beatles analysis featuring James Corbett, fellow Beatles fanatic and podcaster extraordinaire. The plan is to do one Beatles song per album chronologically. Or if my followers would prefer, we can do more cuts from this record before moving on. Most likely, if there's no preference or no response one way or the other, we'll probably just move on to the next record and pick a song from that.

Rob Mullins asked me if I wanted to be interviewed for his new podcast, which is apparently gaining some traction. Rob not only played on my CD, 'Razzamatazz' but we also played in the same band together, 'The Elegant Strangers.' This was a fun podcast because it had the vibe of break time at a gig, stepping outside for a smoke and chatting away. Great fun. We discussed some of my background, my brand of music theory, out mutual ideas about what's going on in the present world of pandemics, rioting, and financial collapse going on around us. In spite of the heaviness of that, the entire conversation remained lighthearted and a lot of fun.

The Greek Modes, the modes of the Harmonic and Melodic Minor scales are 21 shapes altogether. When you master these, you can play through a good deal of jazz tunes in the Real Book. The Tritone Substitution chord deploys a scale called, "Lydian b7" (a hybrid of the Lydian and Mixolydian Scales.) This scale is a 'mode' of the Melodic Minor Scale. I hope you get something from this video!

Here's another I love playing. You can get jazzy and bluesy with this one. It's a lot of fun. Matt Demerrit, as usual, is killing it!
