Well how are we doing with the 50 dollar February challenge so far? It's mid February and we figured it would be a good time to see how the budget is doing. This challenge has been interesting as well to not only get us to eat more from the pantry but also to evaluate how we are doing in producing our own food. And its emphasizing the holes no if and's or buts about that! So what are we doing to fill the holes? Well we are going to give you a sneak peak into what we are doing and it may not be what you think!

Homestead hacks poplar twigs for rabbits
Today's homestead hack is a simple one and something we do frequently during the winter months. Feeding poplar or willow branches to our rabbit herd. This is certainly not a complete ration for the rabbits but it is something they are naturally adapted to consume and we find they certainly appreciate the treat. They sometimes even prefer it to their pellets!
Anyways its just another little tip to help reduce the feed bill during the winter while still providing the rabbits with something they enjoy and can utilize well.
Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe (if you haven't already) for more homestead hacks!

Food shortages does feeding chickens compete for food resources? That's a pretty big question to be asking ourselves as homesteaders. Hopefully this video on feeding chickens and some of the dilemmas is food for thought or thought for food as it were.
Thanks so much for watching!

Raising Rabbits For Meat | Rabbits, Gardens And Climate Change Challenges
Today's episode is about weather patterns changing and how that can be a challenge to growing your own food. For instance raising rabbits in very hot weather is not something that works especially effectively, but this spring our temperatures have reached what is more typical of early summer temperatures and that does cause some issues.
Thanks so much for watching!

Moving Sheds Around On The Farm
Earlier this year we made a list of things we would like to get accomplished on the farm before the middle of 2021 (ish). These small sheds arrived with us when we moved in the fall of 2019 and have sat where they are since then. Its just a time thing as there have been other priorities to get finished. But today we move them and get them in place for our plans behind the barn in our little "barnyard"!
This was a bit step forward in meeting some of our goals!
Thanks for watching us move some sheds around!

Feeding chickens is always a hot topic, and people have been looking for more efficient or cost-effective ways to feed their chickens for centuries. Well, one small trick that can help when raising backyard chickens is to help supplement their feed from the compost bin. In our case, the most effective way to do this that we have found is by using a tumbling compost bin to help attract insects which in turn helps the backyard chicken keeper in feeding their chickens.
