A complete fan game inspired by Sonic bootlegs? Welcome to Sonic: Blasting Adventure! And yes, there's a full game here to blast through. For a game based off bootlegs, this is actually quite a good fan game. You have Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to choose from. Plays simple, with no extra moves besides the usual. For Sonic, it's an insta-shield and the usual spin dash. Feels nice to play, with an exciting 8-bit style soundtrack and a bunch of unique zones and bosses! For some reason, I was expecting a short demo (you know, with some improvements to make and features planned but not added yet). But it turns out that Blasting Adventure is a full game, and has much more to offer than I thought. For anyone who enjoys the 8-bit Sonic games, you probably shouldn't miss this one! Sonic Elements, another underplayed fan game with some potential here! Yet again, we see a Sonic game powered by GMate, which I think is a great engine. (Credit goes to PVic there.) Sonic & Tails embark on another adventure, and this time they find themselves in a cold, icy world. Going into how this game plays and looks, the level design isn't the most expansive, but it doesn't disappoint either. As far as visuals go... the mountainous backgrounds with the northern lights? Absolutely beautiful. The foreground elements are fairly interesting too. (And yes, I know these assets were taken from Sonic Frost, which I should play soon. But credit was given, so chill - pun intended.) Also, when you go underwater, the image distorts in a weird way, but I think it's fitting. Overall, Sonic Elements - Ice Version is a short, but otherwise good fan game! Well, it has some design flaws and doesn't go on for that long, but it's worth a shot I'd say. I'd like to see more from CG_2004 - his other fan game "Sonic World Chaos" is definitely worth checking out as well. Sonic Emerald Mania is quite a new fan game, so I wouldn't expect a lot. But it has a cool remix and a visually pleasing zone! Though unfinished, there's a bit of effort behind this project, which I can appreciate. You have Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles to choose from, and an... unnamed zone! Well, it's only 1 act, so there's not all that much to see here. The visuals are nice (which I've mentioned already), but the backgrounds lack parallax scrolling. Other than the decent level layout, with some twists and turns to navigate, there isn't much to do in this stage. There's no enemies, from what I can tell, and no bosses. But there's a short cutscene at the end. An ending, I guess! To me, this one was a little too short... I like what I see so far, though! Who knows what could become of Emerald Mania? I could see this game becoming something nice, someday. But for now, it's just another quick fan game to experiment with for a moment or so. Nothing that expansive. That being said, I've liked TailsGuy's projects so far. Modern characters in a classic world, a cross of two timelines! Ah yes, something the Sonic franchise certainly isn't new to. This fan game is called Sonic Modgen Mania. If you didn't know, Modgen stands for Modern Genesis, which seems to be an accurate name. I like the mix of inspirations here, with modern moves in a classic setting! So, how is Modgen Mania? Well... I think it definitely could use more polish (for example, sometimes you fall through the level for no reason due to collision issues). But I think the upsides still make this one worth a play. Even if it is the same ol' Green Hill, the level layouts are original, the boss changes things up some, and the sprite-work is beautiful. Might I add, the music choice here is quite nice. And to wrap things up, you even get to see the team run together during the credits. If you've been wanting a quick but enjoyable Sonic fan game with some awesome looking sprites, Modern Genesis Mania might just be the one for you.
