SaiZon is my favorite BL couple right now! I really enjoyed their story and it's one of the better or even best tropey BLs currently for me. Most BLs tend to be a cat and mouse game between the pair and often times(in a lot of other BLs) little reward, bland or cringey displays of affection and then an abrupt albeit happy ending. SaiZon, in particular, had the perfect amount of chemistry without forcing anything and the looks given between the two are the best I've ever seen from a BL couple. I thought Episode 1 could use some editing to better showcase all the contextual layers of the story by rearranging some scenes and removing extraneous dialogue from side characters in places.
*Subtitles to come soon.
I opened the episode with Zon's self narrative intro explaining how he's an aspiring writer who wasn't so focused on fiction until something happened with his sister, Zol. A year ago, her Yaoi fiction gained a massive amount of views and even the attention of a publisher. Zon, who was unimpressed was challenged to do the same with what he likes, Sci-fi. Back to the present, Zon struggles to write his Sci-fi and his grades are starting to tank. His parents step and tell him to focus on studying and stop writing fiction. Despondent, he vents to his friends about his ordeal who jokingly suggest to write Y-fiction like his sister. I made a personal edit here ending the scene write after he contemplates the idea to emphasize this scene being planted. I think this moment got overlooked because of some of the silly humor with his friends afterwards. I introduced Sai Fah and his group in the following scene where he and Zon have a small confrontation. I felt it better to bring in Sai Fah here as a way to build on the plot. Through this confrontation we learn there seems to be some unusual hostility between Zon and Sai. When pressed by their friends about their behaviors they give vague details about a fight over a girl and brush it off. Back at home Zon is still attempting to write his fiction but his computer doesn't seem to be working. I saw this as more of an excuse to sneak into his sister's room to get some "inspiration" for writing Y-fiction. He comes across the fiction Zol has written starring Zon and Sai. Upon being caught looking at Zol's laptop he demands she delete the fiction. She refuses several times and asks why she should. Zon explains that he hates Sai. Zol responds that they shouldn't be fighting and need to solve things. She presses on about what makes him uncomfortable about this "fictional" story suggesting is their actually some truth to it. Zon vehemently denies anything of the sort to which Zol reveals herself as being witness to an altercation between Zon and Sai. In a flashback, we gain more context about why Zon and Sai are unusually hostile to each other. Zon caught his then "girlfriend" Fay(I think) cheating with Sai. Zon confronts Sai about the situation while Fay runs off feigning receiving an important phone call from a friend. In their altercation, Zon and Sai accidentally kiss. Zol, hiding behind a pillar saw the whole thing. Dumbfounded that someone was actually there that day and most of all his sister, Zon tries to explain away the kiss like blaming the angle from which she saw them. She exclaims that Zon is obviously lying and adds that there may be some unprocessed confused feelings he's had about Sai since then. Overwhelmed with Zol's interrogation Zon swears an oath to Zol that there was no kiss or confused feelings and if he's lying may her fictional BL come true. Suddenly, a roar of thunder is heard outside as if to seal the deal. Zol squeals in excitement as Zon blames the coincidental timing. I reinserted the original animated opening sequence at the fair after this moment as I felt the dream better served as a catalyst to Zon's spiraling into insanity that his life is actually becoming the BL story his siter wrote. His hallucination of Sai in his bedroom the morning after and noticing gay couples at school further fuel his beliefs. I reinserted Sai's original intro where he plays guitar here because it serves a number of purposes contextually. Zon comes across Sai and mutters to himself how Sai is the one person he didn't want to see (given all that we've just learned). In this moment, Zon almost adoringly looks at Sai playing guitar which helps soften his changing feelings which I felt was offset by the cafeteria confrontation when displayed in reverse succession. Also the two girls, wishing to take a pic of Zon and randomly mentioning they ship him with Sai drive the BL narrative further. Zon bumping into TharnType after was kept as the cherry on top ending to the episode. In short, I wanted to present the story as Zon writing Sci-Fi blossoming into Zon manifesting Sai Fah fiction whether it be the oath or genuine feelings surfacing when given the ability to confront them. I like the story in that you really feel both characters asking themselves, Why R U...?
